Authors Making Bank With Meh Stories/Writing

The biggest sin of Twilight is that the MC is kinda... bleh. The second biggest sin is that the world building is kinda silly if you think about it. Other than the marring from Bella's need to be a self-insert for disaffected middle-aged women (with tepid love lives), it's a very okay story...

(RE: Depression) Unsolicited internet advice is never helpful, so I'll rephrase it as motivation assuming you don't need it. Resist the tasty foods that throw off motivation (e.g. caffeine), keep up your exercise, double check your meds, and always remember people care about you! Also, these...

It's weird that this is controversial. I mean, even when I'm writing for myself, my goal is to entertain my audience (me). I feel like if you're trying to say something "important" then it gets even more important to be entertaining, so people will actually stick around and listen.

You're in maybe luck, it turns out that building walking paths through cities is both cheap, and profitable (for developers), so there is a lot more interest in getting it done. I've heard Dallas has a big project in the works, and there's been success in other cities. And all it will take is...

I'm sorry, but the pun police are on their way to your hovel castle as we speak to liquidize your entrails. We apologize for the convenience, enjoy your execution.

    About time skips.

There is possibly less skipping in slice-of-life, but often instead of time skips such stories operate timelessly. A good example is a sitcom where we are never given any indication how much time has passed between episodes. Even if you're doing slice-of-life, it's still important to focus on...

I realised I can't be an Author by profession

The solution to never having written a story in hindi is to write a story in hindi. You never wrote a story in english until you did, and there's noting stopping you from doing the same now for your native language. If you're afraid to try something new and expand your skills, then, well, you...

    Taking jobs from bots

Wow, this is such an incredible and awe inspiring forum post. You clearly have great potential as a news writer! I loved the way you highlighted a critical issue in the world and then wrote so eloquently on the subject. By the way, if you ever need professional training as a journalist, I...

"AI Syntax" puts me off from reading further. Is it just me?

The em-dash thing kind of legit pisses me off, because I've only really just figured out how to use them (they're pretty great) and now this fucking cyber-slop is poisoning the well. I hope AI crashes and burns, and every company and investor and organization that thrust it on us ends up living...

    Welcome back, me!

Oh, welcome back. I was just looking up a very short guide you'd written about paragraph structure and for a brief moment I was like, "Damn, they got to her too." Anyway, not that I'm a forum regular or anything, but hope you enjoy your stay (and look out for any stray beams of sunlight, lol).

What's your favorite type of Magic System?

I feel like it depends on the story. Sometimes one is better than the other. Like, easy example, Lord of The Rings would be markedly worsened by having hard magic, whereas FMA is dependent on being a hard magic system for the story to make sense. Asking which you like better is like asking if...

Writing How to handle 20 year montage

Don't overthink it. Just literally do a chapter break, and briefly summarize what happened in the preceding twenty years. It could be as simple as, "I grew up." If anything interesting happens in that time, set aside a chapter for it.

As a reader, what do you like or dislike about dark fantasy?

I'm going to interpret this as, "Is there a dark fantasy story you liked well enough?" so I answered yes. That said, I can only think of one story I've read that qualifies, and though I liked it well enough, the biggest advantage it had over WN in terms of quality is that it had a conclusion...

Play devil's advocate for tropes you like.

Technically the word would just be "advocate," as in, "Please advocate for a trope you like which many people dislike." Not as punchy, perhaps, but more accurate. Anyway, I'm going to advocate for Fantasy Racism, because it's fallen out of fashion. Not only is it perfectly realistic for...

What makes your fiction worth reading at least once in a lifetime?

I'm sure this is pure hubris, but actually I think my prose is just banger after banger. Every time I reread my own work, I'm always catching lines where I'm like, "Damn, what cool, smart, probably very attractive man wrote this? Oh, that's right, this guy." I also have lots of characters who...
