How much would your characters hate you?

My characters tend towards the stoic, so even the one which had a genuinely bad time of it probably wouldn't be too angry with me. Of course, that one would probably judge the shit out of me too, lol, poor guy. The male and female lead of my in-progress story haven't yet finished their...

How do readers feel about AI art between the pages of a story?

Eehhhh, I don't even think the illustrations in a LN add much to them, and having seen a few AI pictures on various WN I can't say they inclined me to change my mind. Like, if what it looks like matters, just describe it. The point of illustrations in a story is, imo, more for the sake of the...

Is a story with zero 'good' characters actually readable? I’m worried my 'trapped-clue' structure is too complex.

"And Then There Were None" features a cast entirely made of unlikeable sociopaths, and is one of the most critically praised mystery novels of all time. That said, a) everyone dies, and b) it didn't over stay its welcome. Also, c) it wasn't written for the "WN crowd" who are, shall we say, not...

Deep vs. Shallow Archetypes: Writing characters who use extreme personas to hide fragility.

They do have that weirdly verbose and "polite" register I associate with AI and east Asians. Also, who's we in that sentence? Oh, right, me :blob_aww:

Deep vs. Shallow Archetypes: Writing characters who use extreme personas to hide fragility.

Perhaps a little tangental to the topic, but a mistake a lot of stories make (including my own, tbh) is mistaking flaws for quirks. A quirk is a bit of glorified flavor text in a story, a flaw causes real problems for them. A great example of a flaw is Woody in Toy Story (stealing this example...

What was the worst thing you've ever read and why was it so bad?

I was a little confused, lol.

What was the worst thing you've ever read and why was it so bad?

As an aside, missed opportunity here with the title, imo, could have gone with, "What is the worst thing you ever read and why is it X?" (With X working both as a stand in variable and a social media platform, lol)

What was the worst thing you've ever read and why was it so bad?

Some people do just be warring against structure.

What was the worst thing you've ever read and why was it so bad?

Sometimes a Great Notion. Famous in the right circles (though I'd never heard of it), I'd happened to have gotten a copy at school, and figured I might as well read it. Not only was the plot boring, the characters inane, and the setting tedious, but also the carriage return on the author's...

Thoughts on Stories with No Protagonists

Strictly speaking, a protagonist is simply the character who drives the action of the story. That is to say, they're the ones who make the story be a thing. The antagonist is the one who opposes the goals of the protagonist. The protagonist of the story doesn't have to be a good guy, they...

4th Wall Breaks, how do you guys go about it?

I wouldn't think there's ever a time when you should need a special designation for a 4th wall break. If it's part of the story, then the break should be normal dialogue or narration, and if its not part of the story, then you shouldn't be doing fourth wall breaks. If you, as an author, want...

Feel like we have to eventually discuss this...

I am also curious. I know AO3 is pretty dedicated to anti-censorship, but I wouldn't think mentioning them is supposed to be risqué. Also, I don't think they qualify as "fewer visits" (unless I'm an accidental WN hipster, lol). Also, as to on topic. Some of you don't know about i2p or monero...

How much do you justify to your readers?

Tbh, you should probably just block/mute the guy. It's okay to have boundaries.

Writing Should I stick with single POV?

For a new writer, I'd suggest just sticking with whichever POV came naturally to you for your first story. Fiddling with the viewpoint when you haven't mastered the fundamentals is a great way to confuse your sense of what's working and what isn't.

What's the weirdest fanfiction crossover you've ever seen?

Alas, I want to read it far more than write it.

What's the weirdest fanfiction crossover you've ever seen?

:blob_frown: ... wut? y? Uh, anyway, haven't read much crossover fanfiction, so I can't really contribute, unless you think Supreme Commander and Warhammer 40k don't belong together for some reason. It wouldn't be weird, but I'd love to read a SupCom/StarCraft/CnC crossover. Alas, no one...

What do you think about diary-style stories?

Well, I was hoping for charming, but I guess I'll have to settle for traumatic :blob_evil: As for MA, that's fair. I didn't mind the "episodic" nature, but I watched at lot of sitcoms and "old" sci-fi growing up (okay, fine, TNG and SG1 are just old old), so I'm more accustomed/desensitized to...

What do you think about diary-style stories?

I'm sure you're very enjoyable. As for MA, I think being "content" really dragged them down. And pokefics are the shit! No, I'm not sorry (even though I only read "How to Train Your Rattata" (not it's real name, lol, but iykyk)).

What do you think about diary-style stories?

Self loathing is cringe, ironic or no :blob_evil_two: As to the topic. The only story I can think of that's 100% logs/diaries is The Magnus Archives (a "radio" play). It has its flaws (changing from an anthology to a serial made a bit of a mess in the lore, and the final season is mid), but...
