    This shit is incredible though. So ethereal, with just enough intrigue to keep it from getting stale. Something something they were ahead of their time or something.

    Put in the simplest way, it's basically a belief system that emerged in some Melanesian cultures as a result of colonization and contact with more technologically-advanced cultures where believers perform rituals and stuff in the hopes of getting material riches or cargo.

    A famous example is a cargo cult that believes an American WW2 soldier named John Frum will bring the people prosperity if they follow him.

    I personally see them as an interesting cultural phenomenon that gives insight into early human religion, but I guess some folks make it a race thing :blob_hmm:

    My theological theory (that I don't really believe in) is that God sacrificed static perfection to allow for change and subsequently the creation of the universe. I like this coupled with Phillipp Mainlander's(?) image of God's suicide but like, not as edgy.

    I've always thought Korean men's haircuts look really cool, but they straight up do not work on most Southeast Asian heads. They just look wrong :blob_hmm:

    The thing about this era of Sunny Day Real Estate is that all of their songs sound the same, so you can pick and choose which songs to listen to.

    This one's a personal favorite, even though it sounds like the other dozen songs off the Diary album. The vocal performance is just unbelievably raw.

    This song is a heavy duty emotional laxative. Crazy nostalgic even though I watched GTO over a decade after its initial run.

    Which makes me wonder...

    Do these guys not know that if you live anywhere other than East Asia, your writing system probably also traces its roots to the Middle East?

    @AYM Yep, but Mesoamerican scripts aren't used much these days (?)

    @SirContro I'm no historian or linguist, but I think even sub-Saharan Africa had writing. I only know this because of that super old Ethiopian Bible written in Ge'ez :blob_hmm:

    Some sub-Saharan countries had writing. Ethiopia definitely had writing pre colonization. Ancient Zimbabwe and most other sub-Saharan countries did not.

    Is it weird that I like this version more than the original? Maybe it's the inclusion of an actual guitar solo. But it's likely Aoyama Yoshino's vocal performance as Bocchi that really gets me. Something about it feels so raw and earnest, like we're tuning into the radio frequencies of her heart... or something.
