I've got two characters ready for the litrpg I'm building in my head, but I can't decide which one to make the main character. I like them both, and I'm definitely going to include both in the story. I think both have the potential to inspire some really cool stories. But, there's only room for one main character. If you were skimming through books on SH, which of these would you be more inclined to stop and give a look?

1. Artificer: he has the power to collect raw materials in his "mindforge" and then craft them into weapons before spawning them into the real world. He specializes in magic weapons. He doesn't have much fighting prowess on his own, so he relies on always having a wide assortment of unique and creative weapons and artifacts on hand that can get him out of almost any situation. He can also create structures in a Fortnite-esque way. This would allow his arsenal to periodically change whenever he comes across something he doesn't have a solution for, and hopefully the readers would be drawn to keep reading just to see what he invents next.

2. Shapeshifting Summoner: while technically a summoner, his powers work differently than most because he has to physically transform his body into the creature he's summoning. This is because he collects new creatures to summon by capturing their souls after slaying then, and since they no longer have physical bodies to be summoned into, he lets them "borrow" his own. This would introduce a sort of Pokemon, "gotta catch 'em all" aspect to the story since every monster encounter could potentially end with him getting a new form to change into. Plus, the whole "sharing a body with monsters" thing could introduce some neat subplots. Do the monster souls influence him? How much control do they have? Is he safe to be around? Etc.

Which main character would you guys be more inclined to read a story about?

Why is there room for only one MC? You could try to do an Avengers/Justice League/Fellowship of the Ring type of team story...
It is generally easier to work with only one MC, but rewarding to work with a team (I've had a lot of fun with Between Worlds, for example; it has six MCs, technically, though only four were intended as such).

There's going to be a few prominent side characters, and most/all of them will have POV chapters, or even entire story arcs devoted to them. But there's only going to be one main character who the story is primarily about.

The 2nd one piques my interest. The fact that MC has to shapeshift into the summoned creature and have it use his own body adds a unique spin on things, b/c he'd have to essentially upgrade his body stats in order to perform a summon like that.

The Shapeshifting Summoner sounds super interesting! The idea of collecting monster souls and using them to transform is such a fresh take, and it would keep things exciting with constant sense of progression. Plus, the potential subplots are very compelling, the internal conflicts that come with sharing a body with monsters could add a lot of depth to the story. I’d totally read that!

I am not a fan of backrow fighter/ glass cannon.

Because the plot will always end up with them depowered or stuck in unfun places a lot more times than any other class.

Take the Runesmith's Roland as an example, he is only as powerful as his armor can be and, unlike MCU Tony Stark who is a Genius, Billionaire, Playboy, Philanthropist, is generally a quiet person and has to get socked by noble hierarchy repeatedly even though he made good death cannons.

Calling him a wuss is too much when he beat down the piece of human shit human commander for trying to rape his wife and enslave him and his entire workshop. But the ride is limited in action scope too much.

The reason why Legendary Mechanic works is because MC himself also gets stronger physically while his tech is his weapon, not his crutch.

To answer the question, though, as I've already done something like the Artificer myself (not the same but close enough), I'd rather see the one I haven't done, the shapeshifter.

Do both. I had a dilemma between a traditional Isekai MC who represents the good but quirky side of what Earth humans to offer i.e. adopting random dangerous magical beasts and teaching them firearms, and Hannibal Lecter. They're on the same team, BTW.
