What is some music that you have listened to or has otherwise inspired you when writing?

In my case, one of my stories is named after a song, that being Mad World by Tears For Fears. Their whole first album, The Hurting, was listened to in its entirety several times when I was writing parts of it, which is fitting since Mad World gets into themes surrounding abandonment, loss of family members, child abuse, sexual assault, and psychological trauma. Another MW-specific album I listened to was also Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park, which, again, is fitting given the themes listed above. Besides these regular albums, the soundtracks of Berserk (including the 97 anime, the movie trilogy, and the awful in most ways besides the music 2016-2017 anime) and Madoka Magica were also listened to a lot, largely due to these two series being the two main sources of inspiration behind the story.

For The Hauntings That Follow Us, I usually wrote that story in silence, although sometimes I would write with an episode of Ghost Hunters or Ghost Adventures going in the background.

For music specific only to The Burning Desire To Save, it's usually a lot of 2000s rock songs, stuff you'd probably find if you typed in "Firefighter tribute" or something along those lines on YouTube. Occasionally, I'd pull up actual radio traffic from fires. Special note for C'Mon C'Mon by the Von Bondies, which was the theme of the FX series Rescue Me, one of several fictional inspirations for the story.

As for generalized music for any of the three stories I wrote here or when writing fanfic elsewhere, it can heavily vary. Much of both MW and TBDTS were written while listening to Susumu Hirasawa, particularly his albums Aurora and Sim City, usually when I was writing a scene not involving an emergency being responded to and instead about life in the seaside village of Harukawa. As a huge fan of Queen, Genesis (and the solo work of both Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins), and Led Zeppelin, their songs also crept in at various points. Special note for Supper's Ready, Firth of Fifth, Taking It All Too Hard, and Domino, all by Genesis, all of which were being listened to while I wrote some very important plot points in all of the stories.

There was a song that inspired me to write a story. Some songs gave me ideas for this or that. Lady Gaga - Plastic Doll (Ashnikko Remix) gave me an idea for a character.

As for what I listen to while I write, I listen to whatever. I listen to music when I write because it helps me concentrate, not because lyrics inspire me or something like that. I listen to; Rap, Electro Swing, Jazz, Metal, EDM, J-Rock, Rockabilly, Psychobilly, Rock, J-Pop, Swamp Blues, Pop, Phonk, Drum and Bass, House, Witch House, Folk, Postpunk, game ost, anime ost, and so on.

I've tried to listen to music while writing but it tends to take over the writing. I did have a story I started a while ago inspired by, of all things, a Luke Bryan song (Play it Again, IIRC).

This song reminds me of why I embrace failure, it makes us now our flaws, you can never know what the gut might bring.

When it comes to inspiration for writing I use that handsome devil songs like savages.

The Akira Soundtrack is probably our oldest piece of writing music. We've been listening to it to write since we were in high school in the early '90s.

Lately, it's been a lot of Metric, Mary Lambert, Lenka, Chappell Roan, Santigold, Franz Ferdinand, and the Nimona Sountrack.

We try to make special playlists for each long term writing project. But we also have a habit of finished a whole trilogy in a month and a half, which is a little too quickly to get around to doing that.

It really depends on what I'm writing. I tend to listen to heavier metal bands during fight scenes, Classical during expositional scenes/planning, etc.

I always have three songs on my playlist though, no matter what.

First.

Second.

Third.

Hope you all enjoy, and let me know what you think!

I am slowly approaching the day I will write my first giant mecha fight scene for my story, and I know that chapter will be glorious.

Mad World was also a favorite of mine years ago when I actually had time to write. I also like this one a lot:

I tend to prefer instrumental music, since lyrics tend to mess with my ability to find the words I want. But there are exceptions, such as a couple of Starset's albums (specifically, Vessels, Horizons, and Transmissions) as well as some Breaking Benjamin and a little Thousand Foot Krutch.

Epic orchestral is a good fallback no matter what I'm writing, and every now and again I'll put on a playlist of the full Lord of the Rings soundtrack. When writing a heavy scene, I like this, and even though it doesn't match my story at all, I've recently been listening to a lot of music from the last century (Johnny Horton, Merle Haggard, Hank Williams etc.)

Neither the first nor the third really caught my attention; I didn't hate them, but I probably wouldn't listen to them again. The second though... the second is fun. It's got the classic rollicking rhythm of a tavern song or sea shanty, which is fitting, considering it's a drinking song. Gonna be adding it to one of my playlists for sure, thanks for putting it in my path!

It depends on my mood, but mostly, I will listen to chill music when I am writing. It helps me focus and stay calm. I can listen to music with words, but I usually do not. If there are words, I prefer them to be in another language.

Lately, I have been listening to autumn lofi compilations or some chill J-pop

EDM = Electronic Dance Music. Ugly stuff that has a good rhythm.
Rockabilly was a product of the early 80s, the main artists behind it were the Stray Cats - mixed pop, hard rock and country sounds.
Don't know about ElectroSwing and have heard the term Psychobilly but have no clue what it means

Example of Electro Swing.
Example of witch house.
Psychobilly and rockabilly are somewhat similar, and it's really hard to draw the line what is what, because a lot of bands do both genres.
Anyway, here is example of psychobilly.
This is rockabilly.
As for EDM, I use it more as an umbrella term. I am not sure myself if it is a specific genre or not.
