How many covers has your book had?

How many times have you had a new cover made for one of your books? For me, The Slayer and the Sphinx holds the record with six covers for a two-book series.

The first one was commissioned by Kory Bing, artist of the webcomic Skin Deep.

But her prices were really high, and the art wasn't the same quality as her comic, so I found another artist who took commissions for cheaper and had him draw a new cover for book 1, and also one for book 2.

Like I said...he was cheap. He also fell off the face of the earth after I got the second cover, so I found someone else who could replicate his style for the third book.

Eventually I found the artist I'm still using today, and had her redraw the covers for both books (I also combined books 1 and 2 into a single book)

The only other book I published that had more than cover was Juryokine. Same story as The Slayer and the Sphinx, I had a cheap artist throw together a crappy cover, and then had my current artist redo it a few years later.

1 arc, 2 covers officially changed, with a lot unpublished art (4 of it usable for a cover)

1... why would you change it? (serious question)
1. I was in my early twenties and didn't have a full time job back then, so Kory was too expensive for me to keep commissioning.
2. I was expecting this level of quality for that price...

...and ended up getting this level of quality.

3. I wanted all the books in the series to look the same instead of having different art styles.

Just one. I draw my own cover and illustration, and I suck at composition/graphic design. Even Canva was complicated for me. Perhaps some time in the future when I feel confident enough in my art, I can make a new cover that's hopefully better than the current one...

Graphic artist here! ?‍♀️ These are just suggestions!:blob_hide: The art is lovely - why change it?!:blob_aww: (I know, no one can ever not be critical of their own work). The fonts are really good and match the art style really well. Just move 'Bloodsworn Eternity' and 'Vow Across Lifetimes' up until it's not covering golden-blond's eyes. Reduce ledding (space between letters) so the words are 'tighter' on the title. Make your name waaaaay bigger, but keep where it is.You should be able to do most of this in Canva.

I rarely, if ever change my covers 'cause I literally fiddle with it until my inner perfectionist gives up. :blob_joy: I will have to do so with works I've received the rights back from my publisher on (even though I did the original cover art, they aren't letting me use it :blob_awkward:).

May I ask how much you paid for those covers?

I don't want to insult them, but they seem very amateurish to me.

Since you are selling your works on Amazon, I think a more modern cover would have done wonders for your story.

HAD made? Well, it took four passes (with, IIRC, 12 total candidate images) to get one both Pocket FM and I liked for Between Earth and Pyrroth.
Took two and six candidates for Digital Cowboy Dane.
But that was because they insist on using their own artwork.

Cover 3 for volume 3 has not been released yet. Covers 1 and 2 for volumes 1 and 2 have been released (ongoing).

This is something we ALL discover.

90% of everything is crap, but when it comes to art, it's closer to 99%

I spent two HUNDRED DUCKS on this cover for my first book 'i kobold'.

This was BEFORE AI overload.

last week, my wife spent a couple of hours on a custom-designed software image generator (Before real AI) and got this:

I am good enough to do the 'added stuff' like title images myself. is it really any wonder I won't pay overpriced 'artists' anymore? i am running out of ducks.

I don't think I've ever changed a book cover; Online, or offline.

For the book I have here on SH, I didn't think people would actually read it. It was, kind of, just a nonsense thing I wanted to blurt my brain into in order to empty my head of random thoughts, and concepts that wouldn't leave me alone; But it's grown, and I guess I should give it a read cover?? Then again, I would rather keep it, and give the remake/ rewrite the Real Cover. New car, New coat of paint- type deal.

There's something about a relic with it's original skin that just feels right.

Why change a cover unless you're unhappy with it?
My book has the mc jumping through worlds with each new arc there is new setting and identity. Changing cover doesn't mean I dislike the old one, just want the cover match the current content.
