I'm curious, what is the dream you had growing up, that you couldn't succeed in? Be it lack of skill, medical or whatever.

I wanted to be a Marine. I loved the Dress blues. At 16 I began working out, had a 6 pack. During the enlisting program I did a psych exam, it combined with a knee injury from the 4th grade (literally 2 months post 9/11) I was 4F. Not fit for duty. It shattered me.

Have a silly image to brighten your day.

Most people would probably answer being a pilot, a doctor, or even an astronaut. Why? Because they're cool. That's what little kids are like.

I wanted to make comics like my brother, but sometime in middleschool, I realized that my artistic skills were just lagging behind the stories I wanted to write. This was exacerbated by the fact 2 people in my friend group were immensely talented artists, which kinda demoralized weak old me. Honestly though, it was mostly an issue of me not really being willing to put in the work to get better at drawing.

That whole episode was what led me to pursue writing instead though, and I still think I made the right choice :blob_hmm:

A comic author. But no, making comics alone is hard, and when I switched to the nearest alternative, a novelist, I was also slapped in the face that I only work hard. No talent.

I wanted to do ATC in the Army, but my eyesight wasn't good enough. Ended up settling for a bad communication MOS, and I spent those years in a shitty unit. 10/10 would not do it again. If I went back in time, I would move in with my aunt, and then start writing from the young age of 18.

Well I wanted to be a comic artist/webcomic artist ... ultimately though, a lot of my mental health issues got in the way of me doing it. Doing a comic or webcomic takes a lot of time and commitment which ultimately my undiagnosed ADHD and Depression at the time made it feel nearly impossible to do.

Could I do it now that I've learned to deal a little with those problems? Maybe. But I don't really have much of a desire to do it now.

For a few years I wanted to be a paleontologist. If there's a job with lower earning potential than "writer" that is it.
Then I wanted to be a writer, but was told "unless you're really lucky or sell out as a copy-writer to an ad agency, or go into journalism, you won't make enough to survive, no matter how good you are, keep that as a backup maybe but not a primary - and, for God's sake don't go into journalism if you want to eat regularly, regardless." (from a dad who had also considered copy-writing, but wound up as a reporter, then editor, then managing editor for a newspaper group).
Then considered becoming a comic-book writer but could never get past the "audition" stages.

:meowsip: If you have dreams, you should go see a doctor.

I wanted to not grow old and die before I turned 30. Now I am immortal.

Before school I wanted to be someone who makes and repairs radios, because then I would surely be able to make one for myself. And I would always be welcome, for sureiy everyone everywhere must value radios.

In school I was told there were no such craft and that my mathematics were too poor for any trade or degree involving electronics there might be. I set my sights on learning a trade since most boys did.

After flunking out, I wanted to be a pilot. Then I was told those had to be smart.
Fortunately, soldiers apparantly did not.

I always wanted to be a professional artist but ended up with carpal tunnel in both hands… I also wanted to do gymnastics but I’m to introverted for that even if I’m actually rather talented at it… I would mention my others but that’s just straight up depressing so I’ll refrain-nyah.
