I hate that elves live for a 1000 years. I don’t care if it’s the staple. It’s jarring.

I think Aqorm in Oracle of Tao did pretend to be about 1000 years younger than she was. I think long life is fine... as long as you got someone to spend it with. I basically worked that idea in, that powerful mages could extend their lifespan, though it required loads of magic to pull that off.

    Are Stakes Necessary?

I honestly don't remember the kid. The impression I got was not that he was indifferent but more like he was totally defeated. Tbh, I stopped caring when he go to shore with mainly just the head of the fish. It just seemed like a terrible waste.

I hate that elves live for a 1000 years. I don’t care if it’s the staple. It’s jarring.

I think I had pureblooded elves live forever. Half-elves (and I considered "half-elves" to also include elves of two elf races, such as wood and aquatic elves) have a lifespan, though it was something like 3000 years or so. Pureblooded elves have only four fingers (I was reading Elfquest) vs...

    Are Stakes Necessary?

I think it's the reverse. You could have a story where nothing really opposes the character (no conflict), but there are clear goals of a character and things they stand to lose (stakes). They succeed or fail on their own merits, not because of a third party. Old Man and the Sea has both...

    Are Stakes Necessary?

I know writing teachers say "conflict, conflict, conflict!" and try to emphasize the importance of stakes. The susp paranoid part of my brain suspects that's Deep State's plan to get us to crave centuries of armed conflict tho. Okay, yes, having stakes does make a book more engaging. Think avout...

Can you give me some tips to make an earthworm look cute?

Worms are already cute. Not sure whether they have tongues, but I added it because it was adorable.

    Writing How to time skip?

The point being, you can literally set up a book like a movie. It's your book, you can do it according to taste. In The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O. they had all sorts of inserts to make it look like letters or telegraphs were being written back and forth.

Recommendations Don't wanna leave time loop

There's a few offbeat Christmas movies. I think one was called something like The Twelve Days of Christmas Eve, where this gal routinely dies horribly (Groundhog Day style) on Christmas Eve until she finally does things right. One of those things is giving people time off that day. Another...

    Writing How to time skip?

    1. Absolutely anything is permitted in literature, aside from links (as it's mostly impossible) and outright plagiarism. Tolkien had insert songs and language charts. I've done text pictures before. 2. Easiest way? TEN YEARS LATER You could also just write to that effect. Talk about training...

    How To Fight Inactivity Block

Okay, right now I'm at the brainstorming and cover design phase. Unfortunately, as I am thinking of expanding a novel into a trilogy, the problem is that I don't know which is the middle book. This is the sequel to A Hero Unmasked. So it's based on the superhero concept, but I kinda finished...

Character you like more than your mc

A couple, actually. No, I don't mean a few characters. I mean a literal romantic pairing, I totally root for. Zoe (originally Anideshi) and Azrael.

Man, I was such a brat

Me too. I've read that a book about writing that talks about ppl hoping inspiration will "come to you"... nah, it doesn't work like that usually. Writing is a rhythm thing. And it's true. Once you stop for awhile, it's harder to pick it up again. The problem is, knowing that doesn't help.

    How To Fight Inactivity Block

I don't tend to get blocked about choosing perfect words or anything like that. I only get blocked when between novels and after not writing for awhile. How do you get back into the rhythm after some time passes? I've been inactive in terms of writing from Christmas (I got some new games and was...

    Add Mermaid tag

There are were werebeasts and I think an angel tag. Surely Mermaids is a different category than say centaurs or other land-based demihumans.

    Rebuilding Democracy in Another world

IMHO, whenever a system fails, the proponents say "but it wasn't TRUE democracy/capitalism/communism/anarchy." Yeah it was. Either accept that every system has flaws and move on, or get out of the way of people actually trying to make things better. Reforming an isekai to "be more like...

    Rebuilding Democracy in Another world

It's a constitutional republic. In other words, laws don't matter, just a bunch of people saying yes or no to things. This is very dangerous as it means that instead of your right to worship or speak/print stuff or have weapons or not be quartered in your house, a bunch of people can bully...

    Dystopian Scene

I read this from Matched, describing a "romantic meal out," and decided on this topic. Basically, come up with a paragraph or longer that completely captures how fucked up a society is. Bonus points if you make it sound positive. I'll try... (So yeah, social credit system, 70%...

    Transfem x Masc?

I would read a pre-op/non-op tomboy x tomgirl story. Bearded lady or actual surgery kinda turned me off after a visit to get orchiectomy instead talked me out of the whole thing. If it would basically be straight but flipped upside-down, sure why not. Two girls, cool with that too. Not keep on...

    reader mad

Currently reading Matched. That whole Top 100 thing for books, music, movies, and even plants. So when I read that, I cracked up.

Writing When is it too much or too little words?

Well, usually if it's an 11-pager, it's something like a common theme (crossing a mountain, navigating a dungeon, or in one case a series of goofy sidequests). I usually think of a chapter as trying to contain a single idea rather than being bound by length. It can be as short as "For the next...
