As a reader, what do you like or dislike about dark fantasy?

Too broad a question - I love some Dark Fantasy, and some of it is utter excrement.

Three's the charm free feedback thread. (Closed.)

Are you fnord telling me fnord that you can fnord see the fnords? And aren't fnord just feeling fnord anxious for no fnord apparent reason?

Wait, I thought it was the fnords that were invisible, not the saids?

How can I transmit that I am talking to the reader instead of narrating the story?

For multiple languages, unless I was writing something expected to be read by an AI, I'd use the old comic book trick of putting it in "<" and ">" symbols, and giving the chapter distinct footnotes for each language. "So, how's the weather?" David said. <What did he say?>* the orc guard asked...

IMPORTANT!!! PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCMENT TO ALL WRITERS AND ARTISTS!!!

Wonder if there's a GIF of the scene in the animated "The Tick" where the title character gets inside his own head and asks the burning question: "Hey, self! How we doing?"

How can I transmit that I am talking to the reader instead of narrating the story?

The TV series on Netflix did a good job with this too, with Patrick Wharburton (sp?). Haven't read the books, but I believe those moments are present there as well, opening with a note like "Gentle reader," "dear friend," "I am sorry for breaking in like this, old friend, but..."

But were they fine female drivers, or just fined ones? That is what we really want to know.

How can I transmit that I am talking to the reader instead of narrating the story?

Is your novel first person? If so, you can directly address the audience. If not... why are you stepping out of the story to talk to the reader? This is a common thing in children's stories but not in English Language novels past the Young Adult level, for a reason - audiences often feel like...

    Mousy... literary terms

Generally, it means a person who does not stand out as either "plain" (according to my wife, usually a euphemism for "ugly") or as beautiful - an average person, almost always one with hair the same color as most wild mice (light brown or grayish brown).

Scammer on the loose aiming at new authors

The activity seems to peak during the first weeks of a school term and during breaks, or at least it did last time I tried following this stuff (before COVID so patterns may be gone now).

    Haunted Houses?

Maybe they were high and not drunk. Definitely not sober at least. When they got lost in the sheet maze, we had to put two sheets back up before the next group because one of them got entangled and took two down getting out - but then they hit the center with a badly made spider and freaked...

    Haunted Houses?

The last time I had anything to do with a haunted house, it was in the then-abandoned (re-opened the next year) dorm on my college campus and run by the Business Department. Had a friend in the business program, and he dragged me through it, then asked if I'd be willing to help work it. Having...

Can We Fix Isekai? (Lost Zoro Story)

Zoro woke up in a strange, brightly lit place. This seemed strange, as that massive boulder had seemed certain to end her* life. Someone was calling Zoro's name, though so she must still be alive. She glanced around, and saw a group of young people dressed in odd, white, button down shirts and...

Can We Fix Isekai? (Lost Zoro Story)

The term Isekai could apply equally to various reincarnation stories, or stories where a character winds up on another world - by purely technical definition, Clayface was right in Suicide Squad: Isekai when he claimed the entire team was Isekai'd. But by common usage, they were sent on a...

    One dialogue chapter

Going to cheat here - no links because one can't really be linked and one doesn't exist yet: "Such calm arrogance. One would almost think you were Arch Mage Thengarian," the odd little man said. David began to reply, but was cut off: "Of course, we both know, he's just a character in a...
