Why are writers fighting the future AI?

I kind of shared that view until I talked to a guy who was cut from the team at Microsoft trying to develop usable, consumer grade AI when ChatGPT beat them to market. Creating the right prompt IS an art form, and he is now doing what he always wanted to do - making movies with his computer...

Why are writers fighting the future AI?

I suspect a lot of what we'll see in the future is what I suspect is happening with at least one story on PocketFM - the author writes a 500 word chapter, then has AI pad it out to 2000 words, often without editing.

    Writing Outlining: How Do?

With more detail than mine: Character(s) exist(s) [list of initial characters, occasionally updated] There is an overall plot. Stuff happens. Hint at overall plot. Lose outline, start over. Wait, why bother, just chuck the outline and wing it. Why did I write that down? Or that?

Any fellow genderswap authors interested in a shoutout swap?

If I ever resume mine (Strange Awakening is on hiatus indefinitely as I have about 1/10th of the time for writing I had when I was working on it actively; heck, given the MCs in True Blue are shapeshifters, it might count too, but wouldn't really get much into the gender identity side of things...

The Art of Creative Insults: A Thread

There are too many in that scene to copy and too many good ones to pick and choose.

When killing off an important character, friend, brother or someone important to The MC. How do you feel about it?

He heals VEEERRRRY slowly in cases like that. Once got caught in a spell detonation that laid him up for two months. He doesn't have any special healing ability, but if it can be recovered from, it will... at about half the rate a normal person would take.

Do you ever ‘cast’ your characters?

Pretty much the same here. Though it would depend on the specific story, in most cases, I'd prefer to have unknowns, at least as the major characters. Some support characters could be fun as "names" - the last time I specifically cast a character as an actor, was the time-traveling mentor for...

Writing, kindness, and new chapters that surprised me

I thought Dave Allen was Canadian - at least his show was on the CBC and his accent seemed to come and go and even vary, depending on the skit. Recall an episode where he did a bunch of "mailman" skits. Mailman delivering weird stuff, or encountering weird things ... or being drawn into a...

When killing off an important character, friend, brother or someone important to The MC. How do you feel about it?

The curse is that until the three artifacts he created that, together so offended the gods, are once again brought together and destroyed by someone who understands that this act will end his punishment, he cannot die, no matter what happens to him. He does not heal any faster than another...

What makes a work of fiction worthy of being called art?

What is "art" though? Writing is AN art, but is all writing art? And how much of art is a science? I suppose a work of fiction becomes "art" when people discuss it outside of itself - when something of the story remains behind after reading.

Well... I have one character who can't ... and kind of wants to... but it was a curse...

The Art of Creative Insults: A Thread

Edmund Rostand did a brilliant scene of these in the play Cyrano de Bergerac (which I was surprised to learn was based on a real guy - the big nose was only slightly exaggerated, and some mythical traits were added to him - but he also was a creator of something approaching science fiction...

When killing off an important character, friend, brother or someone important to The MC. How do you feel about it?

Heh... I have plans to kill off an MC... And it's taking longer than I anticipated (but really can't happen until his kids are born and he hasn't even gotten married yet... and has to attend a funeral before THAT can happen...). And that story has already murdered a major support character and...

What's the worst character you ever made?

I would have to go back and find some of my notes from old role-playing games to find examples (but I think that background taught me how to avoid introducing such characters in fiction... so far...) - there, a lot of ideas got tossed out and only the ones that "worked" wound up being used.

    Vampire Vampire Hunter

Have you ever seen the anime "Vampire Hunter D"? That's kind of what you're describing (though in a more gonzo, anime, anything goes within the setting way).

How quickly do you lose track of time?

It depends on the story. But then, say, Digital Cowboy Dane takes place in a virtual world - days and months have happened for the MC where only weeks passed in the real world. I could figure out how many days it's been for Dane (though there was that week he spent in space where he was...
