So is my novel, the MC is a slime, and, in my universe, slimes are well known for being able to adapt to anything as well as copy anything to a mediocre extent or at best average through outright or clever ways, but of course, he's very simple minded and of course, isn't going to really do anything beyond that copying like combining these techniques or spells as a sort of limitation to him.

Do you think writing a jack of all trades master of none is hard?

Just want some insight before I fully commit to this.

It's a good premise! The MC can't get too overpowered that he breaks the system, but its versatility can be still powerful.

The hardest thing I see here is that you might lose track of all his abilities and not use it when it would be actually helpful. Some readers might notice and see it as a plothole.

to be fair. if he does have so many abilities (author or character), it would be normal to forget things. I lose track of things all the time IRL. forgetting about things until an opportune time (aka when a reader reminds them about x power) would be a great time for the character (and author) to be like, "Oh dang, I could have..." then tell themselves to use it during next time, if x event ever happens again. Just for plot purposes.

"I messed up this round, but next time I'll win" kind of plot

I love writing a jack of all trades, just make sure you dont make them a master of all trades by accident, otherwise it becomes a pure power fantasy
Agreed, power fantasy is fun, but a little overused, and it can sometimes lead to poor writing decisions just to make the main character look better.

My protagonist has a unique ability that gave him multiple types of magic (for context, only a select few people can use magic, and only one type of it), but he sucks at using some of the different types, and later he even discovers that he can't use one of them due to his own mental barriers and trauma. So, ultimately he can still have a relatively fair fight against characters that only use one element. After all, the jack of all trades is usually the master of none.

lol, sounds like my guy. He got a skill called general magic - adept, and has afinities with all magic, however he only really knows how to use healing magic...and a bit of fire magic.

Twinsies! I mean, your guy is like... seventy, right? But hey, they could have just been separated at birth, and your story could just take place fifty years later. We're the authors, we decide what's Canon! That’s not Canon, but it was funny to think about.
