Your opinion after investing your feelings to a character and the author just end up killing them

What's your opinion about that kind of stuff? It doesn't matter if the character doesn't have any regrets when he/she died. Its your feelings towards that character dying is what I would want to know.

Personally, I kinda like them? I'm into heartbreaking and sad moments that can move my heart. When a character I like die and I actually got carried by that moment, it just proves that the writer can actually make the character likeable, to me of course.

Whelp, that depends on how much I like the work.

If my view of the work is shit, then the character death is a good sign for me to drop it.

Does the death help the story and make sense?
If it's yes to both, awesome. If it's no to either, they've screwed up.

I also get annoyed if a character really should die but miraculously survives by some improbable/impossible means.

The story should always come first.

For me? Make his/her life worth it, and we good.

I was actually afraid of this when I wrote what I think is the second real magic fight in my book. Basically: someone's heart got skewered by what can be curtly described as bootleg Naruto wood jutsu. Said character is still alive, but only because of some really weird magic they have and even then they were put in a coma for a week. The lampshade was hung multiple times with other characters going Okay WTF How Are You Alive and still I was like "okay i have a feeling this is going to cause people to drop me"

... so far i havent had anyone try to flame me for being unrealistic. But yeah this comment reminded me of that and I'm not sure why.

.

Right, the main bit. I would be shocked, and possibly in a lot of emotional angst, but I'd have sone respect to the author for having the ovaries to do it, especially if the character was popular/massively beloved.

depends on how they're killed off. if it ends up being great part of the story, the character will just live even more in my heart. like if their death has a meaning and actually brings growth to the story.

but if an important character was killed off in a lame way or like just the author's whims to randomly kill an important character to 'torment' the readers, it might be a sign to move on to better stories.

i personally just treat the characters as part of my enjoyment in the story. no matter if they lived or died, it has nothing to do with me since i had no say on the author's decisions. depending on how it turns out, it's just whether to continue on or drop the story for me. though i do prefer simpler and relaxing stories instead of edgy and dark tragedies, so yea.

If they died doing something awesome/badass, I would be super happy.

If they die just for the sake of having 'drama' with readers or introduce a new character, I won't drop the story, I'll dropkick it.

Depends. If it is grounded in the story and not for simply shock value, then I will even applaud it. It takes balls to take out a popular character.

but it has to be planned and not “just because”

Hmm... If the author gives it away that the character is about to die from the introduction of the character. Like, the character have an illness or just some foreshadowing they will die even though nothing really effects their health, would you like it? If a character dies out of accident, such as got hit by a truck but didn't get isekai'd, would you accept it?

As long as it's justified. I hate authors who kill their characters just because they like to. At least give proper reasons for their deaths.

Death is never welcomed for me. I don't like it. But if it happens, then I'll just have to accept it. Simple as that.

If that is the case, then the character's story should be about how they deal with their 'inevitable' death. So, it depends on the character arc more than anything else.

Now this is just a gag story.

Although, yes, it really pains me if a character dies in an accident/unexpected way. Especially if they die before being able to fulfill their goal/dreams. For me, it's about how the characters around them react to it that either make or break this for me.

A good example for both of these points would be the movie "I want to eat your Pancreas". Just watch it, it's great.
Yep, nothing sad happens at the ending, not at all. :blob_blank:

frankly, I have never seen a bad work that had one good character I could get invested in. So people saying that if the author kills such a character for the lulz meaning the work is bad really doesn't resonate with this majesty because for me a novel that has such a character a priori is good.
Of course, maybe others have different criteria for investing feelings into a character, but it still doesn't resonate.

I haven't watched it. I'm assuming someone ate someone's pancreas and they both died.
Remember kids, never eat pancreas raw.
