Who's going to win GOTY?

I just looked up the nominees for the 2024 GOTY award. They're Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, Black Myth Wukong, Metaphor: Refantazio, Astro Bot, Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, and Balatro. Which do you think is going to win, and do you think it actually deserves the award?

I wasn't a fan of Elden Ring. Even as a Dark Souls fanatic, I think it's where FromSoft finally crossed the line between "tough but fair" and "blatantly unfair and frustrating." And from what I hear, Shadow of the Erdtree is even harder. Plus, it's not a game, it's DLC. I have nothing against DLC (as long as the base game is a complete package and the DLC is just bonus content) but should it really qualify for a GAME award?

Balatro has a lot going for it. It's a concept that's both unique and creative concept, but also easy to understand. Plus, it's just really freaking fun and addicting. But this is a game that could have probably been run on the SNES, so while it's undoubtedly going to win the award for Best Indie Game, it doesn't stand a chance against games with current gen graphics.

Astro Bot is, from what I've heard, a really good game. But it's also a cartoon platformer, and unless the name "Mario" is in the title, that seems like the kind of genre the Awards wouldn't have much respect for.

I don't know very much about Metaphor: Refantazio. I know it's a JRPG made by the people behind the Persona franchise, and it's supposed to be pretty good, but since JRPGs are a niche genre, I don't think one has enough mass appeal to win GOTY, unless...

You have a pedigree like Final Fantasy VII. Rebirth may be a remake of an old game, but it was one of the most popular games ever made, and the nostalgia factor alone might be enough to push it all the way to the top.

I haven't played Black Myth Wukong, but I really want to. It's a soulslike acting as a sequel to the ancient Chinese story "Journey to the West," and from everything I've heard about it, it's a great game. Amazing graphics, solid gameplay, and over 100 unique bosses.

Personally, I think this is going to come down to Shadow of the Erdtree, Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, and Black Myth Wukong. Of those three, I think BMW deserves the award the most, but I don't think it's going to win. The Game Awards mostly focus on three things: gameplay, graphics, and cultural influence. BMW has great graphics and gameplay, and I think being an original IP sets it above a remake like Rebirth (plus DLC like SotE shouldn't qualify) but I guarantee the Awards aren't going to agree. Elden Ring was the latest and biggest game from FromSoft, which means SotE essentially inherited the Dark Souls fanbase, and Rebirth is a remake of one of the most popular games of all time. That means they have numbers backing them up that a new IP like BMW just can't hope to match, which will push BMW out of the competition.

So which one will win between SotE and Rebirth? I honestly don't know. It could go either way. I'm leaning toward Rebirth, but I could also be completely off base here. Wouldn't it be hilarious if Balatro ended up winning? Can't say I'd disagree, either.

What do you think?

You are wrong.
I quote:
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a triumphant return to form for BioWare. This is a top-class action-RPG that lives up to the Dragon-Age name whilst laying to rest the ghosts of Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem. With a roster of amazing companions to recruit, a mind-bending world full of exquisite regions to explore, and combat that raises the bar in every possible way for the franchise, this is the good stuff, thank you very much. We were worried, for sure — it's been a long time since the glory of Inquisition — but we've been served a follow-up here that improves on 2014's game in every way - and that's really saying something. How very exciting.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard review - the best BioWare game I've ever played A fantasy role-playing game of astonishing spectacle. This is the best Dragon Age, and perhaps BioWare, has ever been.

Wukong should win, but Elden Ring DLC likely will cause Cali idiots can't stay away from politics and gaming.
I agree that dlc shouldn't qualify as a full game, but what about Elden Ring is political?

Astro Bot or Balatro, just so "nobody gets hurt about the choices", Elden Ring DLC otherwise. We all know the awards are rigged against Asian games that aren't soulslikes...
Also Elden Ring AND FF7 shouldn't have been in the goty

One a dlc and the other a remake + a part two of the said remake
People still believe FF7 is a remake instead of a pseudo-sequel-alternate-timeline-thingy masking itself as a remake. But yeah, Remakes and DLC should have their own categories.

"Pseudo-sequel-alternate-timeline-thingy masking itself as a remake" is a bit longer and harder to write than "remake".

And it would be too big brain for current game writers as well... I guess it really is just a remake

If the Geoff Whatever's "Game Awards", it's whatever the CEOs of the video game "journalists" want after taking a lot of money from the publishers. 90% of votes are from the "journalists", so expect cringe. I will not be suprised if a fucking DLC wins the GOTY. Metaphor probably will win, due to ideological reasons. If the Real Games Awards, made by Stuttering Craig, where people vote, I think Wukong with high chance, FF7 medium chance, and Stellar Blade medium chance.
