Yep you're right. I was referring more to trad fantasy weapins which are either melee weapons and where bows , arrows and spears are the main melee weapons. I was thinking that you could unlock the morph gun ability but it is super expensive, requires a complex cheat code and can only fire for a certain time before having to go to cool down.

...it needs to be transformed into the melee weapon which requires considerable skill to use which doesn't come with the weapon...

...it needs to be in physical contact with the enemy...

Even if you lost the ability to get health and mana because you are using the weapon at range, it could still be a plus. I would say you probably need to bring the ammo though.
However, even if it is 'only' Melee, it still leaves a fairly large gamut for what it could be. As a lot of weapons used to be tools and tools can be weapons. So Cast Iron Frying pans, Chains/Ropes on Grappling hooks, Bill Hooks, Scythes, Stun Guns. Your imagination can be limitless on the uses for a weapon, outside of combat.
