I'm preparing to release a novel, and I needed a lot of plant-related knowledge to create a new culture and world while keeping a mix of fantasy and creating a new energy system. Moreover, I needed to learn Excel in depth to create an automatic leveling system that would work depending on the many factors I wanted to add to the novel. Even experience formulas, equipment growth rate depending on materials, etc. I could probably create a proper game with the systems I've created for the novel...

My last several books take place in Russia. In the city of Tomsk is a Museum of Oppression. Really. It is a building where the KGB took people during Stalin's era. They were killed there or sent off to forest prisons where they were worked to death. You can walk through the cells in the basement and see how people were interrogated. I ended up putting several chapters in the museum. Wikipedia is such a marvelous source for research.
