What could make a son hate his mother enough to wish her the most gruesome ending?

The mom is the protag of my story. The story ended with the son finally won a hard battle against his exhausted and tattered mother. He then stripped her naked and let his tormentors torture her in public for days until he chopped off her neck at the last moment of her consciousness. She would later sell her soul to get a wish which she used to wish that her son would have somebody in his life that healed the wounds she caused him when she was still a young and dumb mother.
