Seriously, why is it that the only widely known example of pirate-themed high fantasy is One Piece? As a lover of all things piratey, I find this unacceptable, and I intend to address this issue by writing a book that nobody will read. It won't fix the problem, but maybe it will make me feel a little better.

Anyone else disappointed with the lack of pirate love in the fantasy genre?

Think it might be too visual a thing to do well in novels. I know there were a lot of stories set on ships in the past (Horatio Hornblower, Mutiny on the Bounty, Moby Dick, Billy Budd), but there the pirates were always the bad guys, or just a "plot device" (Treasure Island). It wasn't until the 40s or so, with the advent of color movies and the arrival of Errol Flynn (among others), that pirates took off, and they have been popular in movies and television (Black Sails) ever since.

It is a sorry sign of moral degradation of society that enemies of mankind (i.e inconveniences to dominant trade powers) are considered potential good guys. I am indeed shaking my head in quite the dismay.

Is there a pirate fantasy, and is it somehow different from high fantasy and portal fantasy?

Well, my family has a coat of arms issued by the English crown for privateering - that is "Acts of Piracy Against the Spanish Main" - so pirates were, in some case, at least not the BAD guys... or at leas the "Better Bad Guys" (and that kind of the theme of the two Errol Flynn pirate movies I've seen - Captain Blood and another that either I did not catch the title to or just saw so long ago that the title did not stick).

A person versed in Japanese history may well think the same of Ninja - they were generally the bad guys, but a lot of the nobles they took out were even worse.

And, back on topic, I think the steady increase of One Piece fan-fiction suggests there IS a market for it.

See.
It's not a crime if you rob someone else than the Englishmen!

Several nations issued Letters of Marque allowing privateering against other nations. The English and the Spanish had the biggest rivalry in the Caribbean and issued the most but there were Letters of Marque from other nations as well.
True pirates were the ones who either ignored the "Oh, don't attack the ships of OUR nation or we'll hunt you like dogs" provision from the issuing party, or (the majority) ones who never bothered to get sanction from anyone.

The pirate robs for himself.
The corsair robs for himself and the king.
Then we have unsupervised children provoking the incompetent totalitarian government in anime and ...
Got it.
Now we only need to establish who was high to make them high fantasy pirates.

Unless half of the important battles are just boarding and the other side giving up with no casualties, I don't want em.

Go look up The Windsteppe Princess and the Amalfi Magician on RR. It's a pirate story I wrote. It's a romance, a bit spicy, but good. And a fantasy. Not RR cup of tea, but I got a few readers who liked it. One said she read it in one sitting. It's 30,000 words, about a hundred pages.
