I dunno where to ask this... but I have a story set in the late 19th, early 20th century, with a secondary character of minority status. I want to insert the casual racism and his embarrassing of said racist, but I'm unsure if that's permissible, if not the seen can be altered or removed.

If it's historical, do whatever could've happened is in that period, Only Americabros care about it so much due to being conditioned for it. Truth is, it's just another symbolic interaction you can use to make someone to persuade to have feelings in your story. Nothing wrong with it at all, and those who will point it out and blame you for it are emotionally charged babies.

Write the section first then ask someone if it comes out as you intended or accidentally distasteful.

let me put it this way: I've written some bad scenes. Abuse, neglect, slaughters, entire towns left painted in blood. And some of it I had to describe in vivid detail for the scene to come across as required for the eventual wrap-up.

The trick is not "glorify" it. that is to say, you can't show such things as "good". Showing that they exist is fine. But they should be painted in a bad light - something that won't make others want to do it IRL. I'd say write it then have someone read through it to ensure it comes to the reader how you wanted it to. A major downfall of authors is filling in details in their head but forgetting to include it in the work itself. This leaves readers with half the info that you have.

Technically:

You agree not to post User Content that:
  • Contains any information or content that we deem to be unlawful, harmful, abusive, racially or ethnically offensive, defamatory, infringing, invasive of personal privacy or publicity rights, harassing, humiliating to other people (publicly or otherwise), libelous, threatening, or otherwise objectionable;

On the basis of the rules, if it has the potential to be seen as offensive by the moderation team: it could be removed for effectively any reason at all.

But there is a difference between a person protecting themselves and their interests from the wider world’s legal persecution… and enforcement of the rules.

I have seen some truly vile things written on this platform, including from fully villainous perspectives which are not prettied up for sake of preserving the audience’s moral fibre.

I prefer not to speak in absolutes, but I have to wonder just how bad a story has to be to get pruned here.

The greater issue probably isn’t your story being accepted — it is whether or not audiences have patience for it.

And to that? You only need to look to the success of the most popular works on this site.

Smut’s top ten by popularity is… legendary.

Only way to find out if it is fine or not fine is to submit it.

If your story isn't about legitimizing racism, then there shouldn't be a problem at all. Write your story.

Well, depends on what you are being racist against. I mean, weren't there only humans and your lizard overlords on your planet back then? What other race you going to be racist against? I mean, the Lizard Overlords have nothing but contempt for you, so I suppose they'd be just fine with racism against humans.

Oh wait, you said early 20th century. Is this set during the second American Revolution when the lizards let you have your own country because you wore them down until they gave up out of sheer frustration? Well, I suppose as long as it doesn't make the lizards look bad, they'll permit it.

Real-world issues are always, always problematic. They are better to avoid even if the site rules don't explicitly forbid you from referencing them, not because it violates some rules, but because it is not worth the trouble.
