Cover of “Totally Spiritual” by Dice, featuring a miniature knight on a graphed workbench alongside pliers, a ruler, and a gem ring.

This is a wonderful cover. It catches your eye, doesn’t look like every other novel on the site, shows the title in an easy-to-read manner, and depicts the main idea of the plot through symbols such as the knight on the workbench.

Just look at it.

Authors, readers absolutely do judge based on the cover. Yes, I understand that the cover above was probably paid for. However, if you want to spin up some unique new idea on Canva or however else you edit images... that can still work to draw in readers.

Actually, I think this Latest Series has the most diverse cover art I’ve seen in a while.

The standout covers are the ones that have a focus point that pops out of the background, none of the books in the image have one.

Every other cover in this line-up sucks.
It's:
some dude
some dude
some dude
a dude and a girl
a bunch of papers
some generic symbol
and commando

The knight one gets a pass.

Another two covers I like are of
The Last Orellen (RRL) by sieley because it is actually very good

and Kamigami something (NU) because it's so stupid you cannot ignore it (and is very neat of you look past how goofy it is)

Wait, people don't like covers of random anime girls? Viewcounts says differently

They bring views, but they are bland and dull.
People like generic stories. So a generic cover art advertises exactly what you're getting. Seems like a fair choice to me. After all this site is all about pulp/smut so I personally don't have an issue with generic anime girl covers advertising generic isekai smut stuff.

Now what does bother me is when they screw up the aspect ratio and make the image look all stretched or shrunk.

On a Star Wars book I worked on I got no views until I added an anime girl with cleavage to the cover. I think viewers are legit just lizard brained people that just click on shit that lights up their neurons. (I am also deep in lizard brain)

This brings up a few interesting thoughts I changed my cover from a campfire to an attractive goblin girl and saw the day after a gained a spike in views the percentage of they to reader was the same as always however so many were just piqued but the cover and left, whole other decided to read.

Thing bring up a thought if the cover is the first thing one sees how does would they interpret the story, would they have preconceived notions? From image alone a hot green skinned girl, one would think "goblin girl? Smut? Adventure? System? Fantasy?" followed by the title which gives a core point away "monster tamer"

It makes me think how certain things are received by the time you see the image a generic one and the title insinuating a generic grand adventure of power ups it can feel off puting as if you can already guess the plot without reading, making you skip the book.

Curiously I decided to experiment it only a hort one like twenty minutes I went into the series finder tags to find stories with the "monster tamer" and "goblins" came up short with a collection of seven stories two (mine included) had hot goblin girls center.
Two were generic, one was filled with to much for me to come to a conclusion and the other two were good giving me a good impression one was simple with the title and I found the simplicity nice. The other made me intrigued.

Again I didn't do much I should've just chosen the monster tamer tag and gone through but, I'm on my phone and don't have the time.

So I propose this with the same tags, head over to series finder and and to see if you reach the same conclusion I about the covers. Excluding the two obvious thirst traps, list the two generic, two good and the one bloated cover. You don't have to it's just to see how we view covers and if they affect our approach of reading. And I'll respond on wether we got the same.

This is to see if we can agree on what a good, generic and bad cover for a story is.

This is an interesting idea. I don't quite have the same opinion as "two generic, two good and one bloated". I actually feel like two are "bloated", another is "not quite there yet", and the other is "passable", ignoring the one which doesn't yet have a custom cover. So I'll write my thoughts on those four below:

Monster Breeder:
(bloated). Its a blue cover with a title and a bubbly texture. The reason It feels bloated is the texture is too much. The bubbles just feel a bit too vivid.

Secondly, the feeling it gives me runs contrary to the title and synopsis. From the cover alone, I'm expecting it to be some sort of horror story about the deep sea. From the title and synopsis... I'm really not expecting that.

UNLIMITED ANIME: (Bloated)
This one's pretty simple to explain, I think. Too many different colours and symbols in the centre of the picture. Also, I feel like the title blends into the mess of colours in the centre, and should probably have a black outline to make it stick out.

One thing I think is interesting about the cover is the use of the border. I think I like the idea of covers having borders, but I haven't paid a strong attention to different covers to confirm if I like them or not. Regardless, the idea of putting a border on the cover of a novel is one I'm thinking about myself.

Monster Queen - Ashi's tale: (not quite there yet).
I think this one might be more controversial. It's different, and it sticks out, and thats good. But I see one flaw that would make me very quickly pass over it. I don't know what the white splodge in the center is. Is it meant to be the MC? a Monster? It's just standing there and doing nothing. Again, I can't tell what the story is about from that title.

It seems like the cover is there to be interesting and different, but it doesn't promise that the story has any substance.

World Saviour? Nah, I'm gonna live however I want:
(passable) It's definitely a bit on the simple side of a cover, and thats some negative points for it, but its not an ugly cover. As well as that, I can at least tell it's an isekai from the cover alone. That might seem really trivial, but I feel like that shows the author thought about his novel and wanted to present it for what it is, rather than trying to make some eye-catching but completely unrelated cover that has nothing to do with the story, or something.

Anyway, this one is my favorite out of the four covers.

After writing all that out, I think my TL:DR about covers is that they, like titles and synopses, should try to be an accurate portrayal of the themes and the tones and the plot of the novel itself.
