Fair point... Although I'm questioning what do you mean by 'for children, or young readers' because I was planning to add darker elements and mature topics, along with a lore reason into it, but I can see how it turns out that way.
Even child literature does not chide in darker elements nowadays. As for why it seems to be targetted at the younger public: you have anthropomorphic animals wearing clothes (once again, there are reasons humans wear clothes and other animals do not wear, it's called adapting to the environment and much later "morals"), your narrator is explaining basic character functions such as "and so they said to themselves", "and so they thought to themselves" which makes sense when you are explaining to young readers that there are no one else in the scene even if it's obvious there are no other characters in the scene.

Even if you were to broach death and killing in such literature, it would not be strange at all. In fact, it's not strange for it to be talked about. It's about how you talk about it, instead of simply mentioning these things. Literature can be used as a learning medium, and therefore, several less savoury topics can be safely taught if you have a good approach. As an author, it's about knowing how to tell a story, not what to tell. Hence, why using animals to tell something dark has been a staple when telling children's story. Of course, you can also tell adults as well, but you need a different approach than the one for the younger audience. Yours just seem, to this bird, to use the younger audience approach.
