So I wanted to go into a technical question for a sci-fi story I'm working on. (The story is here on this site). Sometimes when I don't know about technology in some areas, I have to ask people here or elsewhere because I want to get the details right.

So here it is;

Is fuel cell battery technology real? (As in water fueled fuel cell batteries?) And are they any good if it is real?

The sci-fi story I'm working on will quote various high tech battery usages for ... certain details... and when I first started working on it a few years ago I did some research but now new things came up and also I don't know a lot about those things.

Curious what you think on battery technologies? Like for fuel cell batteries but also, OK if we were really on a high tech starship... what kind of batteries would they be do you suggest?

The water doesn't hold charge.

It is a conductor, but it doesn't work as a capacitor, or a battery.

You couldn't have a water battery.

As for water as the fuel, it's not really possible to run an engine on water either.

It is possible to run the engine on hydrogen, which you would get from water with hydrolysis, but then, where you get the energy for the hydrolysis in the first place?

Yes... hydrogen fuel cells. That's what I was trying to remember. But you are right. Water is resistant to heat also, which implies it doesn't change states without a lot of heat.

But your answer did help. Thanks!

This subforum is for feature requests for the site, not stories. It's even in the title;

Your question should be asked in Authors;
Or maybe General;

Hydrogen could be used as the rocked fuel.

That is, liquid hydrogen. That's what we have right now.

It is very inefficient as you burn through a lot of fuel very quickly. It's not feasible for interstellar or even interplanetary travel as you would need 90% of ship compromised of the fuel...

A sci-fi propulsion would be probably the fusion torch drive.

It's what you see in the Expanse (TV show, sci-fi setting), and their version is insanely effective.

It is, however, not exactly physically impossible, we just don't know how to do it yet.

The sci-fi drive in expanse is powered by uranium or plutonium, but it is technically possible with hydrogen, as hydrogen fusion is a thing, it happens inside the stars. This is where the hydrogen fuel cells could come in.
