So, I got a direct message from someone who wants to translate my work into Russian and wants to post it up on tl.rulate.

Obviously, I have a few problems with this. The main issue is that this user will have control over the page on tl.rulate, and I don't know how reputable this site is.

So, I was wondering if anyone else has posted stuff on tl.rulate or knows anything about this site.

Yeah I was just some random reader on RR that was asking if they could translate my work and they want to post it on that site.

Not sure if it's going to be their own personal translation? Or they're going to use some type of AI translator.

Anyways, I've never dealt with something like this and it makes me uneasy to say "sure go right ahead."

You can always ask the reader if you're unsure about something.

That's an illegal site like Panda site that got banned early this year. They steal originals from WN and Scribblehub and post them as far as I've seen. Even locks up fanfics chapters. They even stole my original from Amazon and plagiarized it. Then they took the fanfics and posted the free chs as paid chs like Webnovel Originals.

Yeah, I'm asking some probing questions right now to get a sense of this person. I don't know if I'm going to get much out from them.

We'll see.

Is there a way to find out when they launched this site or is it not worth it.

The simple answer is… no. Just like those scammers who say I could be the next Jk Rowling or want to make my story into a comic since the planned every panel. Say no.

or ignore them.

No idea. They have multiple sites like novelbin, zinmanga, and a couple more.

A couple chapters of my fiction showed up there. They didn't ask but I'm not trying to monetize it so don't really mind so long as they are offering it for free.

You could look at the internet archive to see the first snapshot of the site. That is generally a good way to figure out the date it launched.

I just don't want someone else trying to claim ownership over my work. Because at some point in the future I would like to publish my work and I don't want someone else to say that it's their story.
If someone wants to do a proper translation of my work than that's cool. It reaches out to an audience that might enjoy it. I just don't know if it's going to cause more trouble than it's worth.

And I haven't heard back from that reader, yet. So maybe nothing will come from this.

I haven't gotten that message yet. Maybe if I wrote HP fanfics than someone might say I'm the next JK Rowling :blob_nom: if I sign on the dotted line.

One of my good mates helped with Chinese novel translations over there (https://tl.rulate.ru/book/422). That was in 2018 and I remember it being around even before that (~2016ish), so it has been around for a while. Some translators there earn money through donations (ЮMoney).

You can read their legalese, but I do not know what enforcement would look like. Mate's Chinese novel is still online, but it might be because he was with the site's group. In the comments under the legalese, you can see plenty of people complaining about deleted translations.

You can ask them to release slower (~5 chapter buffer). Then perhaps some people will check your English version.

It wasn’t Harry Potter I was writing. It wasn’t even me. There are bots saying that to people who are writing One Piece Fanfiction.

Oh I know, I was beginning sarcastic. When anyone tries to compliment me by saying that I'm like <insert famous successful rich person> I usually laugh at them because I know that I'm a nobody and there's no way in hell that my "smut with plot" stories will ever get mainstream attention.

So it was a bad joke. :blob_catflip:

Yeah that's why I'm asking probing questions. Because if they are going to use an AI to translate my stuff then I don't see the point in having them do it because I don't trust AI to do a good enough job not to have mistakes.
