What if I write a fan-fiction based on my own work? I would need to create another account to do so and it would be some work, but it would be good promotional material.
Just a random thought.

I mean you could do it on the main account and have it just be a prequel/sequel/alternate world and/or timeline.

Promotional material? You mean to make it look as if your fic is big enough to warrant having fanfics made? That's a unique approach but what would be the point? Your focus would be split between the main fic and this new one making the real one suffer as a result. Seems counterproductive.

Yeah, as promotional material I think it's not a good strategy-- one fic won't change people's view of things, and my feeling is both people are more likely to read an author's AU than a fic of their world, and unlikely to read a fic without at least a passing familiarity of what it's based on in general.

The only good strategy to writing your own fic that I can think of is to write smut fic just because you want to write smut about your not-smut story, and also have semi-plausible deniability.

A number of Japanese mangaka did dj of their own works. They made non-canon events either for porn or something else. I don't see anything that warrants the creation of another account unless you want to popularise your fanfic under a different pen name.

In short, there is absolutely no reason you can not write a fanfic of your own work. The key reason is to create a different scenario which isn't recognized as canon but was neither a spinoff, or a sequel, or a what-if and does not belong to the original series.

I did that once, but then I sued myself for copyright infringement and sent myself a cease and desist.
I'm very fussy about who uses my IP.

I don't think an author write "non-canon" material of their own original work. It should be considered an alternative story.

Writing a "fan work" of your original story to promote it is self-defeating. It's effort you did not spend on writing the original, and fan-fiction is supposed to be written by a fan, representative of what the fanbase of the work feels. This daoist doubts it would increase your readers because reading a fan-fiction before reading the original is putting the cart before the horse.

The effort spent on making the "Fan-Fiction" can be used to :
  1. Improve the story's grammar by running it on DeepL/Grammarly or something
  2. Revisiting and Rewrite the first chapter and improve the writing quality. (Be careful not to fall into the trap of Rewriting hell loop, in which you keep reqwriting over and over again as your writing quality improve during the rewrite and stopped continuing the plot).
  3. Advertise your story in another Forum and other WebNovel or Writing sites.
  4. Finding volunteer for grammar checking or beta-test for your story. But it's advised for you to beta-test other people's story to improve your contribution credibility tho.
