I friggin love pirates, especially when there's a fantasy element to them. I've wanted to write a pirate story for so long, but the lack of attention my stories have gotten over the years makes me hesitant to even start a project that doesn't immediately fall into a popular genre. I tried writing a pirate litrpg, but it sank (lol) since it doesn't really mesh with my natural writing style. An isekai probably wouldn't be too bad, though. MC gets sent to another world, world is almost entirely covered in water, MC becomes pirate. Would people on here be receptive to a story like that, or am I just setting myself up to get ignored again if I write it?

So would it be One Piece Pirate (which isn't even actual piracy at the sea) or is it somalians but instead of RPGs and AKs, it's Fireballs and Mana Bolts?

It'd be "You aren't with the oppressive government and that makes you a pirate by default, prepare to die" piracy. But there'd also be legit evil pirates, and MC would wind up on the bad sides of both.

I think it might be cool if you have the main character be a genius HEMA fencer before dying or being transported, then instead of making him get overpowered with magical bullshit, he can overwhelm his enemies which may or may not have magic with modern martial arts that have had more refinement than what the new world probably has.

If you combine that with the realistic nature of most pirates relying more on brutality and fear than actual skilled combat you have a great concept.

Uh, I must say, try it. Test the waters. Writing is a hit or miss, anw.

It might not get popular here, but you can upload it to other sites. Also, this forum is separate from the main site. I mean, this place may not be receptive, but maybe the main site peeps do.

Any case, main point: try it.

One of my ancestors was a privateer (even earned a coat of arms from the English Crown for his attacks against the Spanish Main). The only difference between a Privateer and a Pirate is a "Letter of Marque" which means you unofficially fly under that nation's flag as long as you don't attack any ships owned by that country.

You have a steep hill to climb with most people thinking pirates are either the loveable but barely competent scoundrels like Captain Jack Sparrow, the ruthless "mobsters of the high seas" that they were in the two episodes of Black Sails I made it through (actually possibly the most accurate portrayal), or the "wandering adventurers who happen to travel by sea" of One Piece. Can't say I would or would not want to read it without knowing more about tone and if it's set on the world the historical pirates believed they sailed (a world where there were "probably" sea monsters but humans were usually a bigger threat), a fantasy world with sea monsters and ghosts and curses, or an historical setting like the old pirate movies generally strove for.

So are you going to answer my question, or...?
Sorry, I did not read your plot after getting the whole One Piece Fanfic vibe ringing in my ears.

Also, Waterworld? Really? Now I am recalling that 1995 movie and the Universal live shows again.

My question is, will there be supernatural/ advanced technology involvement? Will there be superhuman power like a certain popular manga?

If the first question is NO, most likely because PIRATES, I already feel iffy. Though to be honest, I stopped giving chances to SH works so just treat me like a loon then.

If the second question is NO, then why bother? If the second question is YES, would it be warped into said popular manga?

The thing is, what exactly is the end goal? Waterworld is a premise, but what is the end goal?

Yes, there will be magic. No, there won't be futuristic tech. It will be more like Pirates of the Caribbean than One Piece. The MC is pulled into this world with his sister and then separated, so his ultimate goal (at least starting out) is to find her and then figure out a way to get home.

I remember you were talking about an interesting reindeer story thing some time ago. Where did you post it?

:blob_happy: Fun pirates fact: Pirates were and still are considered since antiquity in terms of international law "hostis humani generis", enemies of all mankind. There are one of the few cases of people you could historically hang and shoot without repercussions. :blob_cookie:

The only successful novel about pirates I know of is deep sea ember and that is only half a pirate story from what I know, so I'm interested if you succeed

There is a fan theory that Captain Hook and his crew all used to be Lost Boys lured to Neverland by Peter Pan who managed to escape being murdered by him when they grew up.

I have only read one chapter of it so don't know but I've heard that was what Barrie intended but never actually stated in the original novel.

I have a pirate fantasy, but it's actually a romance. Didn't get much traction at all on RR, but I did get some comments and one person thanking me. She said she read the story in a single sitting. It's 30,000 words. About a hundred pages.
