arguments are rarely something to try and "win". it's not you vs your wife, it's you and your wife vs the issue; you're on the same team and it's a shared responsibility to try and work together

On a more serious note, the wifey is the one that controls the household's finances, and you do not want to piss her off. At least, that was the culture and tradition a decade ago, which might change now (not there anymore to comment on that), but the joke, which I assumed they were (semi-)joking about, goes back for generations.

i think that would apply to pretty much all cultures. "Yes, Dear" seems to be the right almost-all-purpose answer... except if she asks "do i look fat/old/insert-negative-descriptor in this?"
