I've been brooding over this for a good bit now (especially after my lil Florida Man accident.) In a certain point in my story, I want to my MC to summon a demon but I can't come to the decision of choosing between two scenarios. The first one, I feel fits the scene of the story perfectly but the second one, I don't feel that the said creature would fit.

I'll start with the second one first.

it's the mental torturing of a shitty noble by using a demon that only he can see (think the demon from 'It Follows' and Freddy Krueger). The demon goes by the name of No Friend Ben, he's a tall black mass and the only thing notable about him is his drama mask that's always frowning until it slowly turns into an eerie smile as he spots a person.

His objective: Wanting a friend that'll play with him till the end.

If you say 'yes' then he'll be your friend, and like a friend he'll 'play' with you until the end.

If you say 'no' then he'll just ignore you but pop up whenever possible and just stare at you with an eerie smile.

It's a lose-lose situation.

Anyways, I was going to have it that the moment the idiot noble said 'yes' a whole horror scene will commence. The noble will slowly go crazy before No Friend Ben kills him.

As for my first scenario, it's basically the Sam's premise as the second scenario but instead of it being a demon, it'd be a vengeful ghost in the form of a prostitute.

He (the noble), along with his father, killed her because she was going to have his baby.

She wanted to keep it but he didn't.

So when trying to persuade her 'politely' didn't work, silencing her was the only option.

With the MC summoning her and her ultimate goal of wanting to kill the noble, she'll slowly want to torture the noble before killing him as well.

These two scenarios are basically the same thing except one is more up on the horror scale while the other more of a poetic justice type of thing.

Anyways, I'm torn so why don't I do this with a poll.

May have screwed up the poll since it's my first time using it.

Is this a world where birth control and abortions are legal and safe, or . . . I feel the context of the world they live in will have a huge impact on how I view that scenario. What are the laws regarding paternity? Does that world have DNA testing to prove that the child was sired by the noble? Otherwise, why would anyone believe the prostitute's word over the noble's word? For that matter, how would the prostitute know who the father is? Is she getting amniocentesis, or is there some sort of magical explanation as to how she knows who the father is?

The noble is a notorious playboy who's been known to frequent high class brothels. Only the best women for one of aristocratic lineage!

Due to this eliteness, women who bed high ranking nobles hold a certain amount of power.

High class courteseans is the correct word for it.

This is based in middle age isekai world btw

Assuming they actually take the prostitute at her word, is the noble actually obligated to raise the baby or anything of that nature? Is he required by law to pay child support, or would the woman be completely responsible for deciding to keep the baby?

He's got other wives but he's not allowed to touch two of them due to his father using nefarious means to push the wives' fathers into marrying him.

A string of political marriages if you will.

Normally, the Woman would take care of the baby but due to the fact that the noble is married to three high ranking noble daughters, the news of him siring a child from a courtesan would hurt the reputation of his family and theirs.

Therefore, not taking the slightest chance of such a thing happening, the nobles father told him to handle it, and handle it he did.

Go with the eerie black mass. I dont care about some dead pregnant ghost ruey fucked over. We have enough of that shit, i say go with something more original.

Although...if you DO wanna go with the pregnant postitute, may i suggest an addition? Bring in the dead baby. Ever play Witcher 3? Look up the red baron quest line. Basically we get a zombie baby with shark teeth.

Add THAT in. I dunno what you'd want it to do. Maybe kill its father? I assume either the noble or the noble's father got her pregnant. So you can have fun with that. A few haunting encounters with the baby and the mom before they close in for the kill. Maybe the baby eats someone's penis off. I dunno, go wild

Why not combine both?

I mean that would be a cool idea if you can somehow combine them, you would have something a little more unique.
Like a demon that disguises itself as the dead prostitute coming after the protagonists soul or something?

Friend Ben bc he more mysterious. The more mystery there is to a story, the more intriguing a story is and the more horror feel it has.
So this is if you wanna go with more horror and mystery. What we cannot see or know really well, is sometimes what scare us the most.

With the ghost that was pregnant but killed (medieval times different. some know its theirs, but don't claim them, not even if no more legal heirs), that story is more of a sad story. Kinda know why the ghost is haunting that noble. So it can still be horror, but since its more explained why it happens, it seems less scary and some sad. Idk. Sometimes horror ghost stories - can take out the scary feel just by thinking how sad the story is (think that may be personal view of it). There's not much mystery going on here, like the previous one. And frankly, this story happens make more realistic so it doesn't give that weird out of there mysterious vibe as the other (ben) does, and in this case, the mysterious part seems more intriguing the the pregnant ghost one.
