So Mob Psycho 100 and Yu Yu Hakusho are two series that are widely agreed to be a part of the shounen battle subgenre. However, shounen battle isn't the focus of the 2 series. Mob Psycho 100 revolves around the growing-up story of its characters and the same for Yu Yu Hakusho. There are an overarching plot line with antagonists but those aren't the be all end all for the 2 series. The primary aim has always been the characters. A lot of stuff that some readers would label as filters are actually important to these 2 series because it helps getting the readers closer to the characters.

I want to do something similar. I got a protagonist with her own story but the world also has its own events to be unfolded. The protag isn't the world savior or anything. She just does her things but sometimes she got involved with the main events of the world. It's easy to say that we should incorporate character-focused scenarios into the main events to allow readers to understand the characters more while enjoying the greatest attraction of shounen battle genre (namely the battle scenes). However, there are other activities beside fighting and I want to dedicate a sizeable part for the protag's daily life.

How do I do it without being called sidetracking the story?

Call it sub plot.

The original plot of my story is fighting to save humanity, it became a subplot
