For authors who wrote stories featuring MC in constant bodily harm, how soon did you gave your MC Regenerative Healing Factor?

Sparrow had it since the beginning.

David West never really has it but frequently has healers (and a friend who's a nurse) nearby so it's rarely an issue.

Dane Coleman never has it - but his Sidekick does.

Jack Diamond never has it and (if I get that far) will suffer for it in the fourth book

I didn't.

Of the MC's who fight consistently and get hurt in my stories none of them have the ability to self heal inside the battle itself. Its part of the fight tension and skill test for the MC's to get through these fights without the ability to shrug off wounds etc.

I have had some who have an external source of healing. Its a consumable and has steep trade offs for its use. I try to never give power to my characters without some form of payment.

Death is also part of the setting. One wrong move and the MC can absolutely just up and die and some have already died.

The more I read, the more I think I should not provide MC with a healing ability. Minor healing potions are good enough and the best they do is to use after fight, not during.

Its going to depend on the type of story your trying to write.

If its a power fantasy then you have more leeway then if its a grimdark setting for example.

What matters is what your trying to write.

Since he was born, Robert has had regenerative power that could be linked to Biological manipulation. However, due to his genetics, the regen is slow, which lasts him a little bit longer in the battle. There is barely any difference between whether he has it or not. He subconsciously activates this ability without losing stamina, without the story telling you so, and you probably know it. Also, he can ONLY do this ability to himself

Even into the unposted part of the story, he doesn't have one! It's much worse!

The only way to heal himself is to injury himself *more*, just mentally instead of physically

The lead of the series have their passively restorative ability coming in at Stage 8. One before their three strongest stages.

9, 10, Fallen Queen.

Each have their conditions to enter.

Anyway, when they enter stage 8. They go into a berserker state. Meaning they will attack without end, even when they are heavily harmed.

You can say self preservation goes out the window, and the battle won’t slow down until one side falls.

The main for Azure Night has a similar set up, given that they are the second Iconoclast. With differences.

Such as their strongest state is the Empress of the Night, where their capabilities tremendously increases.

Another difference, is that the main in Book 7 isn’t like the lead of the series. While the lead of the series is reluctant to use their power.

The one in Book 7 will do so without restraint. However, their route is similar to the main of the series.

The factor depends on the damage level, damage type, the veil, and their personal total stamina.
There are recovery orbs that instantly restore stats (and most of the lost stamina). Without the items it's a few hours, with them it's a few minutes or less.
However, real time damage or damage while outside the veil restores at a normal rate like it does irl. plus there is a limit to how many a times can keep restoring and using their MP daily, since it will eventually stress out their magical circuits.
