Hello friends! While scrolling on VGen, I found something called “YCH.” Basically, an artist has a “universal” template and just draws your character’s features into it. It’s a lot cheaper than custom illustrations. Now, I’m interested to know if any of you have used that before, and if so, whether you were satisfied.

The question is: What does that template look like? Like, if it's just the pose, it wouldn't matter, but characters tend to have different sizes and their own "identity". The body needs to be different, and there need to be enough details to actually "tell apart" the character from other characters. What exactly is that "template"?
Is it like A1 Picture characters, that all look exactly the same, to the point where you can take the "face " (eyes, mouth, nose) of one standard protagonist (i.e. Kirito from Sword Art Online) and swap it with another male standard protagonist's face to see basically no difference? I haven't yet heard of this method as a whole, so the concept kind of raises a lot of question marks.

Its usual a pose with a "raw" body, which can be slightly altered(shape etc) and then just fitting in the character features.

So that's how it is. In that case, as long as I don't need a specific scene or a special pose, I don't see why it should be a problem. I don't have any character art and don't plan on buying any (since I don't use it), but I see the merit in it for people who do.

I think it's a good thing. It's a way for artists to give the commissioners references that they can use for their own character.

It's less work for the artist if they have a template to work off of.

Only things that could be diff is how the character looks. I know Your Character Here templates are popular with couple OCs. But also I tend to see YCH options open on holidays.
