Quick question to fellow Scribble Hub readers ?
Do you like novels that mix humor, family dynamics, and a bit of chaos instead of being serious 24/7?
I’m talking about:
1.Awkward family relationships
2.Misunderstandings that turn into comedy
3.Characters who feel like a family rather than plot devices
4.Lighthearted moments even in tense situations
If that’s your thing, I recently started writing a novel called
I Married a War General and My Kids Want to Kill Me (Literally)
It focuses a lot on humor, strange family interactions, and the everyday chaos of living with people who… might not exactly like you ?
It’s my first novel, so I’m genuinely curious:
Do stories like this appeal to you?
And what do you usually look for in humor + family-based novels?
Would love to hear your thoughts—and if it sounds like your taste, feel free to check it out ?

Well, the theme of family is one of my favorites in fantasy fiction. I've read a lot of family-centered fantasy fiction, like Leadale, Slime Taoshite 300nen, even shoujo mahwa (especially manhwa with the title embellishment's daughter, mother, son, etc) and absurd family manhua (e.g. Demon Lord Who Lost His Job). It's never boring, although casual readers who love power fantasy might find it boring.

My fiction also centers on family, with the theme of the bond between a mother and her young daughter in a dark fantasy world. However, I might take a different approach than you. My fiction is truly serious, heavy, dark, traumatic, and even brutal. Why?

Because the background of my FMC is very dark... she was a former executioner of a broken world who decided to retire to raise her daughter. This fiction tells the story of a mother's struggle to protect her little daughter's innocence in a dark world.

I love the tenderness, warmth, and affection of family. However, that side might seem ordinary to some people because they're used to experiencing those emotions in the real world.

That's why I wrote this fiction... contrasting the tenderness and affection of a mother and daughter with the dark world so that readers can better understand the value of family. I want to show that the love and tenderness of family are not weaknesses, but strengths, even when faced with a dark world.

So, back to your question: do you like family-themed fantasy?

Yes, I like family-themed fiction with a fantasy setting (whether dark or light) because it creates a tone and vibe that resonates with real life. However, I take a different artistic approach than you do. And my opinion may be a minority among millions of casual readers.

My novel is a little bit humourous.

numbers 1 and 2 I am not so much in favor of. Prolonged embarrassment is something painful for me, including anticipation time, which is why I generally do not like sitcoms. Even when I recognize how well done it is, it makes me squirm and want to leave the room or otherwise block it out.

The rest of it your description is certainly something i enjoy, and I don't object to a little family drama and comedy, and use it myself.

As incidental things or in short fiction I can really enjoy that stuff (and tend to write most of it), but as a focus for a longer work, it just begins to grate after a while, especially prolonged misunderstandings.
