With the exception of the textbooks and other lengthy non-fiction books I've published, I never do any plotting ahead of time, I think about my subject, research it when required and then I compose at the keyboard. I have always done that--even in the days when I used a typewriter and making changes was not an easy task as it is today. I also don't know where the story will take me in my fiction (with the exception of my novel which largely paralleled my actual experience).

I don't recommend my process, but it always has worked for me and continues to do so, especially for my poetry and fiction. And, aside from the preparation required and having to work from some sort of at least a broad, general outline that integrates my research, the process for my scholarly non-fiction is not all that different.
