I think most debates are already stupid because they make it a pro or contra thing, nothing in this world is good or bad even if you don't consider the subjective nature of every single argument. Of course you can do that but I don't believe most hold only positive/negative opinions on a thing.
It destroys nuance even if this approach on its own has nuance, it's far more easier to just say yes.
Another things about debates that I find important is that logic doesn't matter, the dialectic way is stupid, it can have a lot of merit in discussions that are purely empirical, I would say but things like the god question exist. Rationalism in a greater form ignores emotions (though some rationalist try to include it (like myself) in various ways), emotions are an essential or at least important part (depending on the ideology) for arguments. You could show the most devot Christian the perfect argument against god but without crippling their fear in the first place it will be useless but one traumatic event could destroy their complete faith , an example would be the ruby ridge incident, of course it's only one example but why shouldn't happen lesser version of it when it comes to the lost of faith after a traumatic event.
We always need a reason to believe into something and most of the time the best arguments won't matter. The above is true for any belief we hold or at least I believe so.
