I don't like videogames, and rarely play them. But I watched a video about nethack the other day, and it got me intrigued. Searching some more I found that it seems you can play it in a terminal, which is a huge plus. But I still wonder if I should.
If you do play it, can you tell me about the general experience you have when doing it? Is it very balanced? What you like about it the most. I saw some videos on youtube but I don't feel like watching them.

Why is being able to play it in a terminal a huge plus? Personal preference/aesthetic? Just curious.

You could say personal preferences. In my experiences, programs that run on terminal are just better - they are faster, better made, easier to use.
On the contrary, programs that need their own homebrewn interface are usually worse than alternatives.
I guess it's because terminal programs generally don't have unnecessary things, or, rather, the developers take care about not bloating them.
Whether that be usual UNIX utilities like ls, rm etc, or things like vim(the biggest influence), ranger, yt-dl - are all awesome, and much better than their non-terminal alternatives.
So it is not a surprise I have developed a taste for terminal programs and thus a liking for cli/tui over gui.

Besides, a tui (and moreso a cli) can always be wrapped in a gui. Not so much for a gui-in the first place programs where you're stuck with whatever the devs decided to give you

no

Though if you like command line games there are many MUDs still out there that have been running for decades.

So I used to play nethack a little when I was younger and remember it generally being an easy game to enjoy, understand, and run. I really liked the randomness of the game and the adventure-feel that it gave off. It was one of the earlier games I played and it was one of the more fun options I had as a youngster when PCs were first starting. It provided a little information that my imagination ran away with.

It was of course frustrating at times since I was a stupid nugget with all of the different items, effects, and little details to track but it's a treat if you're into that kind of game.

I'd say it was fairly balanced gameplay-wise but again, I played when I was a kid. Difficulty at the time wasn't exactly on my mind. I just dealt with the cards I was dealt and did my best to win. I don't recall ever actually "winning" per say, but I did get through a good handful of levels before ultimately fudging something and dying. Four or five of that and I'd give up and find something else to do.
