My story has no harem, my mc isn't beta or a coward, and I tend to make my mc, not op. Though my FMC is quite annoying in early chapters. Some early chapters are wonky in grammar and my readers tend to be confused about what's happening. I edited some of them of course. I also have a single review that praises the story and nothing else. I know I made some kind of mistake somewhere. Any advice?

there's more to a novel than a harem and beta mc. a low rating doesn't mean the author is bad. it means the work is flawed. your 3.8 is not terrible. you have flaws, if you can't identify them yourself, ask your readers or look for reviews

It seems like you already know the things you need to improve on. If you are working on it, that means you can still progress from a beginning author to a decent author.

Drop your story link if you want people to review it too. Not everyone see signatures on phone. This is probably better in the story feedback section since you are asking advice on improving your story.

check story feedback section, there's like 4 active threads atm. post it there. you should also ask your readers. I'm sure someone will say something helpful

Every registered users with confirmed emails can give a low star to a story. Having low ratings don't mean a story is bad. You will know a story is bad if people starts flaming you.

There, that's your answer. Don't matter if you have a good plot. If I need to be high AND drunk to know wtf I'm reading, then that's a negative impact on the rating.

The following is based on my observation:

If you don't appeal to the crowd (GB or GL), don't already have a following (Got other readers from previous works), and and have a moderate amount of readers and growth (which is only maybe 1-2 a day), your rating is probably going to be between 3.0-4.0 stars regardless of quality or how good of a writer you are.

Author's who have a following will have a lot of people give 5 stars regardless of how good it is and it's not a real rating of actual quality.

You put in a ton of tags so there will be more people discovering your story, thus there will be those who interpret tags/genre differently and just rate 3 or below which brings down the average.

Every author didn't become expert overnight, everyone had to started somewhere.

Ask your readers why they rated your story so low, without knowing the reason, how could one improve?

Most readers on ScribbleHub are silent. For feedback, I recommend writing.com or WritersCafe. Both of those sites have point systems that encourage users to leave reviews carefully.

if you're worried about grammar, just use grammarly and let it auto-correct your stuff :D /

it means the work is flawed.
No it doesn't. All it means is that the reader has an opinion.

OP, there's nothing wrong with being rated under four stars and it doesn't necessarily mean in the story is flawed. It may simply just mean that the readership for your story is a little smaller than some other stories, and that's all.

How is this even related? The fewer readers you have, the lower your story's rating will be? It doesn't work like that.

I've read a lot of stories on this site. any work under 4 (given enough ratings) is flawed. I'd even argue that every work here is flawed.
if you can't admit that simple fact, how are you going to grow?

It depends if you three people rated your story: 1 was 5* and 2 was 1*.

However, @Horizon209 has 433 readers bud. 36 ratings.
So no, the readership definitely ain't small.

If you have that many ratings and multiple comments from multiple different readers, then perhaps its worthwhile a chance to look into it. In this case, he's on the right path. He acknowledges where he needs to improve. If you always cover things with syrup, it may hinder them even more, because they don't know if they need to improve and where.
