A character’s morals are challenged during the story.

It would be reasonable, but it would alter how that character is seen in the future. Permanent blot on their record that would need to be addressed, even if just by feeling guilty about it, for the readers to take any moral stance by the character seriously in the future.

Depends on the lapse in judgement based on the morals shown already by the character. Then if it is not dealt with by author with an explanation why or rectification, it could put off the readers. Also, only putting a comment in the authors notes or in the comment section, is not conducive to continued reader support. It should be in the story itself, even if its "a wait there is more later in the story" type of comment.

If it is simply a lapse in judgement of who they trust, decision they make or something similar, maybe depends on how it is written.

I think it depends on the readers and if the laps is in line with how they would have acted themselves. I mean, most readers want to be able to sympathize with the main character. If the lapse in judgement is understandable, like trusting the wrong people, falling into a trap that was well hidden, or something like that, it isn't really a problem for most people, as they can relate to the mistake. But the title mentioned a character's morals, and falling into a trap or getting betrayed isn't really challenging the morals. So another example is needed.
Lets say your character is usually a good guy. Always striving for the best possible outcome and wanting to save everyone. But then, these morals get challenged because the love interest gets kidnapped because he picked a fight with the wrong guys. And now he has to betray his friends, or start to mercilessly slaughter the kidnapers, or anything like that. Something that he normally wouldn't do. In such a case, it really depends on whether the reason for his lapse in judgement is relatable. I mean, most people would probably say that killing is wrong. But probably even more people would say they would kill to protect their children. So, even if mc picked a fight with the kidnappers for some dump reason and now needs to act out of character, it is reasonable. I would even say it is an opportunity for the character to grow.
On the other hand, if you have a normally good mc and he starts to kill random people because he was drunk or because he was irritated because of some mundane problem, then it would be more difficult to sympathize with the mc and it might annoy some readers.

But the way you wrote your question I assume the mc didn't deliberately choose to do something out of character but just made a dump mistake. Then i would say, as long as it is reasonable why he did what he did at the time he did it, its fine. Just talk about it within the story, and its not really a problem. Unless its something really, really bad. Like helping an enemy who then kills of thousands of people. In such a case, the reason he helped the enemy should be quite good, not just because of some vague morals like, I don't kill my enemies and everyone deserves a second chance.
Also, the redemption for the mc shouldn't take to long. No one likes to read about whiny mcs.

Would it be out of character? Probably not. Would the readers understand? That's on you - if you write it well, probably.

Would they be annoyed? Definitely, at least a notable part of them. Would it be an issue in the long term? Again, that's on you.

The issue with those kinds of things is that it's very easy to make a story unrealistic and all if you don't do that, but it's easy to fudge up and make it unrealistic. But guess what, he who does nothing makes no mistakes. If you have a good reason for it, then go for it.

There isn't really a way for anyone to give you a definitive answer on that. It just depends on so many factors.

How has your character been portrayed? If your character is as observant and analytical as Batman, but suddenly he overlooks something obvious to further the plot people will be annoyed because they will feel it was forced.

How relatable is the lapse in judgement to readers? If the majority of readers could see themselves having a similar lapse given the situation the character was put in they are likely to be more forgiving of the lapse as long as you show the character being punished and feeling regret over having done so.

Also it depends a lot of how serious the lapse in judgement is. Saying something that hurt someone close to him sure if written well can be recovered from and add depth. Accidentally murdering someone in a fit of rage when the character or someone dear to them was threatened. Also understandable and forgiveable. However the character loses themselves in drugs addiction and lust and ends up sexually abusing someone or worse even a minor you're going to have a very hard time ever getting anyone to empathise with the character again and are pretty much guaranteed to lose a lot of readers regardless of the follow-up.

So yeah it just depends on a whole lot of factors so there isn't really a general answer if the question is just they had a lapse of judgement. The best advice I can give is make sure to give it a good set up. Don't just spring it on your readers completely out of nowhere. Make sure the character receives negative repercussions for failing to uphold their morals and show that they're contrite. Finally make sure not to take their moral; failing too far to where the majority of readers will see it as a unforgivable sin.

Humans make mistakes and have lapses in judgment, no matter who they are. Is it understandable? Yes. Is it out of character? It doesn't matter; if he or she were stressed enough, anyone could make a mistake. Will it annoy your readers? Yes, but oh well, we are all human. Some don't understand that characters aren't perfect, and that's fine.

Write what you want to write, and don't worry about others. Just enough what you do, and if you think your character will do that, then so be it. Remember you write for yourself first, then for others. Don't do anything you don't find fun, and make sure you enjoy what you are writing, and others will too!

What you are talking about is someone of weak moral character. Good is usually difficult. Being evil is usually easy. If it was the other way around, more people would be good.

The problem is, when someone is weak willed, it makes them less likable. I have one weak moral character, but the point of the story is he is always being tempted. It is very difficult for him to say 'no' all the time. It makes the readers a little nuts, but on the other hand, it is also the single most popular story I have written (that has my name on it as an author). So, while readers COMPLAIN about your MC being weak-willed and having lapses in moral judgement, THEY SEEM TO LIKE IT.

Take it for what it is.

I think for morals specifically, have them meet/clash with someone who follows the same moral logic but takes it to extreme/bad ends, making them have to grapple with wether their moral foundation is correct or not. Or have someone with an opposing moral compass and they have to team up for something.

No, it wouldn't if it still fits the character. But statistics prove that there are more dumb readers than writers.
The amount of dumb comments I read from the Re:Zero webnovels who criticize the story using some of the dumbest logic imaginable and then admitting that they just skim through all the chapters made me realize how dumb the majority of readers can be.

As expected from Subaru-kun.
The one that experienced laziness route, and other kind of emotions (WHAT IF routes). I find him in this thread.

On serious note.
Yes, readers dumb. Even dumber in 2024 (brainrot).
Especially when a chinese fav author of mine, did a big rant on a chapter note, criticizing them as being shit (in general, not his fans) that they picky, drop for any small reasons, authors cant do this that, and that old masterpieces would flop if they appeared nowadays unlike the past.
I loved when he cited Dc LinRan (the big popular CN at that time) : "Do you guys seriously immerse the story bc you guys got the handsome face of the hero ? Did you even bother to check yourself in the mirror?"

Btw i recently read a novel of Re:Zero
and only recently learned about the WHAT IF routes. Very great.
I was a disliker of Re:zero but like always, CNs that spoil the plot of works, always make me change my views on them (like Jojo and others)
Chinese otakus praise a ton re:zero XD
Its bc they are asian and in general they are smarter/IQ than english users.

In my experience literally anything that isn't 100% generic trope affirming, most obvious possible continuance, 'safest and most optimal' character choices is going to be rejected by at least 75% of your readers.

So fuck 'em. Consider the number of readers you piss off by not being smooth and boring to be a badge of honor.

Out of character? No.

But if you set up the expectation for your character to be a perfect person who doesn't make mistakes, people will probably be disappointed.

Like a lot of things, it's easiest for readers to accept it if it appears early.

If the lapse of judgement is out of character but it results in a decision reader like it won't matter, even in an egregious case where the protagonist suddenly has a problem killing because it's immoral and having an entire discussion, giving the mass slaver enough time to escape. Yes that happened in a novel, I dropped it for some time but I was quite alone with that action.

Nothing in a story matters to readers as long as they find it entertaining, you should ask if the target audience would like it.
