Rocks are superior, but I agree with the "Why not both" sentiment here. If it can't be both, then always choose rocks over lizards. Squishy crystals do sound like blasphemy though.

My chapters have slowly been getting longer since it just feels better to me. I started with 1.5k chapters but now I always have more than 2.1k. I'd say write what you feel comfortable with and what feels natural when reading. It's different for different novels.

It can work. Just remember to give yourself some space to decide. I feel like you might corner your story too much if all the outcomes are a coin flip. Remember, readers can get pretty upset if your main character comes up tails too many times in a row.
