The Layman's Understanding of AI's Value is so Horrifically Bad

This is the opposite of true. People inclined to blind trust have a much higher chance of survival than the highly skeptical. Instincts evolved before higher comprehension, and learning from a parent evolved before society did. In 99 out of 100 cases, blind trust in information from other...

The Layman's Understanding of AI's Value is so Horrifically Bad

In this case I think you'd remove the comma after 'at least'. "And he walked east, at least he thought it was east, before he finally stopped to look at his map." Again, not that any of these are wrong, just that they have different meanings as you read them.

The Layman's Understanding of AI's Value is so Horrifically Bad

I believe that is the correct use of the em-dash. It shouldn't be a stand in for like 4 different kinds of punctuation though. For example, if you use commas instead, it has a feel that the character themself is unsure if it is east and is stating the unsureness in their own thoughts, rather...

The Layman's Understanding of AI's Value is so Horrifically Bad

This turned into its own rant again, so apologies for it: These things can all be said about cable television's influence as well. Standardization of accents across America and the lack of fact checking against whatever the news says. 9/11 and it's consequences and influences in American...

The Layman's Understanding of AI's Value is so Horrifically Bad

I should add that when the big ones did it, they were careful about their phrasing such that it wasn't actually a scandal or fraud (Think X-AI having people in robot costumes at their big celebration thing). This is a problem that goes well beyond AI. Anytime you hear someone spout a political...

The Layman's Understanding of AI's Value is so Horrifically Bad

There have been multiple instances of this (including I believe two instances from 'big ones').

I'll also note that the copilot/gpt signature style is there. It uses "It's not just x -- it's y!" multiple times, with an overreliance on em-dashes.

The Layman's Understanding of AI's Value is so Horrifically Bad

Actually, though I didn't state it, the opposite. I think LLMs produce just about as good of quality goon material as most 18+ authors and artists do. Quality doesn't matter as much as "taste" in those situations, so it does a good job of adhering.

The Layman's Understanding of AI's Value is so Horrifically Bad

I like AI though. If I intended to do something, I would have. I've been in plenty. I was an automation engineer. If my argument actually boiled down to something that could be considered a manifesto, its that stupid people (and I mean the actually stupid people, not faux-stupid) should be...

The Layman's Understanding of AI's Value is so Horrifically Bad

It wasn't enough of an essay? It said, oh write a longform or a manifesto. A manifesto would be a call to action. This is more of an observation. The only action I could call people to would be inaction (not using an LLM), or some kind of destructive act. Therefore, it was trying to call me...

The Layman's Understanding of AI's Value is so Horrifically Bad

This is pretty much my understanding of it. I had written a huge rant just now on this again, but instead, I've deleted it, and will simply say this: There are many fields where "good enough" performs nearly as well as "great" and both perform 10x to 100x better than "none". Cover art in web...

The Layman's Understanding of AI's Value is so Horrifically Bad

Rant- Let me open this by saying, LLMs are useful. AI in general has the ability to be as revolutionary as the internet and the industrial revolution. From AI art to research, the value is akin the invention of power tools, photoshop, the steam engine and other such revolutionary tools. Now...

    So about that club...

Did the advice go over well, or should we expect them to show up on the forums in a few years asking the same questions that have been asked and answered?

    Gamers As Writers Bore Me

My frustration in a similar vein has occurred with kingdom building stories. Literally the main inspiration for my ongoing story. Though there are plenty of detractors who actually prefer the skipping forward. I think, whole-heartedly, that a decent portion of the population has had their...

    Legends.

No human being is truly good. Least of all those who strive to morally browbeat others. Anyone who claims hateful rhetoric in America today is worse than it was 60 years ago is crazy. Almost every scientist and politician who legitimately made the world a better place in history also had some...

The Authorial Urge to Post Everything

Hedonistic impulses. Would you rather get one comment now, or 5 comments on the same amount of words every week 6 months from now? Reliability and consistency produce consistent readers. It took close to two years to build up enough of a following to the point where my chapters get multiple...

The NOAA is Letting Me Down...

For some additional info, coming from a Midwesterner, this time of year, you're essentially flipping coins. A 100% chance of rain does not mean you'll have a 100% chance of seeing rain. The NWS breaks down predictions into county sized chunks for most of the US (some places with large counties...

The NOAA is Letting Me Down...

This is heavily dependent on where you are in the US. The last 3 years have been a la nina weather pattern, where as right now we're between la nina and el nino. When we're between the two, the central US gets some wild unpredictability in weather because both the tropical and arctic jet...

If you do touchups etc, I'd go straight to Amazon at that point. Far more money to be made there.
