    Hard Spaces

This isn't an advert (I swear) but I've just started a poetry thread that people seem to like, and I'm pulling all my punches there. I've got a lot that I just can't post, so I'm giving them vanilla! :( Great idea! That's what I was trying to do last hour, and I somehow deadlocked the forum...

Resolved Forum Editor controls (B/I/_ etc.) stop working

I think I figured it out and it's not adblockers or add-ins. I reported this using MS Edge, which allows every damned thing to infect a machine. So I switched to Librewolf, which blocks so much that most websites down't work, and there it was fine! Then I went back to Edge, looked at a post I...

Resolved Forum Editor controls (B/I/_ etc.) stop working

LOL. Everything you just did. Not working for me. Some days it does. Other days it doesn't, totally random.

    Hard Spaces

Please provide a way to enter hard spaces in the Forum and Fiction editors. (Space that doesn't collapse when rendered.) Example: please provide hard spaces The words above, have lots of space between them, and the second line...

Resolved Forum Editor controls (B/I/_ etc.) stop working

Forum Editor controls stop working. Like they're disabled. It's happening right now. Highlight text, press bold, nothing happens. Restarting browser doesn't help. Sometimes the editor works. Sometimes it doesn't. Haven't found a pattern. Tried several browsers.

[Poll] Best thing you can get from a reader as an author

Yes well, that is why on six web novel sites out of seven, I've decided to take my ball and go home. Readers who don't read don't make the rules for us unless we choose to impersonate whipped dogs. I respectfully decline. I have one and a half feet out of the last of the seven. As to SH...

[Poll] Best thing you can get from a reader as an author

I'd be happy with readers who actually read the book. From beginning to end. No skimming, no skipping. To simply read the thing. Sounds simple, I know. On the Internet, in the Web novel era, vanishingly rare. Even among the readers who enthusiastically engage in robust comment exchanges, few...

Writing How important are dialogue tags in your fiction?

Yes, yes certainly! One must set the scene and place the characters in the room. I'm taking the term "dialogue" too literally. I'm thinking 'di--', as in two. As opposed to monologue and conversations, involving larger parties. In monologue or soliloquy, setting the scene and speaker is...

Writing How important are dialogue tags in your fiction?

The more necessary they are, the weaker the characters. The reader should not need prompts. Each speaker should have a distinctive voice, which should be identifiable in terms of not only the prevailing situation, but also the variations in the characters' persona, style of discourse, and...

    Minecraft Server for SH users

Minecraft is my favorite game. We play in our own realm, survival mode normal, no cheats, no mods. I've killed the wither, not the warden. The fighting aspects I can take or leave. I prefer to collect materials and build. I am a master builder. (Or so I'm told.)

    What's up with the downvoting?

Yet another good idea that would also be gamed by the writers (as now happens on other sites I could name, particularly a scurrilous LitRPG haven with two Rs in its name). The more weight Reviews are given in list placement, the greater the incidence of (1) quid pro quo review swaps ("I'll...

    What's up with the downvoting?

Another good idea. But writers and writer-groups using sockpuppet accounts will have no qualms about adding comments to their ratings. "I read stuff that knocks my socks off. And my socks are still on. One half stars."

    What's up with the downvoting?

Uncommented downvotes in most sites are posted by writers, using guest/sockpuppet accounts. I can't imagine why it would be any different here. Now see, good idea, but I think if a metric contributes to list placement, writers will find a way to game it. A binary system (thumb up/down) will...

    Warning about bot accounts

Pro tip: when a "reader" lauds your luscious use of 'this' and 'but,' ask yourself, before responding: "Have I really used 'this' and 'but' lusciously and elegantly? Or is this message balderdash?" Odds are good that your second impression is correct. Fine-tune and exercise your...

Silent acceptance or vocal criticism--Which is better?

It's your story. Not theirs. Write your story and finish it. If it doesn't get read, then adjust on the next one. Remember, if you're doing your job as a writer, you're playing your cards close to the vest. When readers tell me they don't like a character or don't like the way a scene is...

Is 5k words too much for the first chapter?

Fine then, I'll elaborate (sigh). Ignore the length. Do you end a letter to your mom mid-sentence, because you're at the bottom of the page and you planned ahead to write a one page letter? No. You flip the paper over and continue. Your letter's as long as it needs to be, to say what you need...

Why do less boys and men read?

I said, people can no longer agree on what the word means. Words have meaning. Most who say they are reading, aren't. Many skim. And call it reading. Many just skip around and look. And call it reading. I can't believe how many look. And call it reading. And I've even encountered people who...
