As far as I know, jet engines in the narrow definition, so airbreathing jet engines, do not have constant efficiency. Or if they do, I haven't found that in any of my sources though I admit I have not searched in detail.
Ok, you're using the broad definition of a jet engine. This is fine, but it's not the thing I'm trying to point out. I originally took issue with this:
Rocket engines are different however, in that they are not airbreathing engines and do not depend on the environment (this is why we use rocket engines in space). This makes their performance much more consistent regardless of velocity, enough that in simple calculations it can be taken as constant.
Jet engines do lose efficiency both at low velocity and at high velocity. The former is because they partially or completely rely on incoming airflow to compress the air, the latter is a natural limitation of airbreathing engines - at some point, the air passing through the engine cannot be...
Okay, so I concede the first point I was going to make about types of engines. Technically I could argue that there are more types, but this is a nitpick, got your point. Rocket engines, however, are not included in that; I think you grouped them too broadly. Rocket engine and jet engine are...
From my experience, traveling by plane is only worth it for long flights, like 6+ hours. It's way too much of a hassle for shorter trips - the flight might take two hours, but you'll need to add at least 2-3 more to reach the airport and pass all the control with time to spare, then pick up your...
Other than all good ideas above, one method I've seen is assimilation, so as a character learns to use an ability better and more naturally, it becomes more intrinsic to their being and at some point disappears from the status, as the system no longer assists them with using the skill. It can be...
@SailusGebel Rather than getting defensive - yes, this is precisely what I've seen in myself. However, the knowledge I have is the curse that makes me aware of those mechanisms, and hopefully allows to protect myself from them.
I personally like psychology as a hobby, for my own satisfaction and introspection. A lot of what I've learned there has helped me with a couple of mental quirks I have. But I don't think I will ever be able to stomach psychology as an academic subject.
@SailusGebel Going back up for a moment, yep, I get what you mean because I've been there. A part of my family is kind of like that... and another part is the opposite and doesn't get it at all. Not fun during Christmas.
We talked about something similar some time ago iirc, on my profile even.
@SirContro If I understood correctly, yep, that's roughly what I meant. The point I'm making is that, if the king's advisors say their honest thoughts and provide advice without thinking about how, how much, and when, it's very likely someone might interpret it wrongly, which can then lead to a...
@Omnii Nothing to apologize for, everyone's there at some point. I specifically wanted to talk about this because I got burned a couple of times in the past in nearly identical ways.
@SirContro I meant that more in context of modern hierarchical systems, though it is related. This, however, is a way to circumvent a system. Why does the jester give good advice though, instead of advisors and experts? They have no agency, sure, but how would it look if some noble suddenly...
I never said we shouldn't, but this is primarily beneficial in a hostile environment. It causes a lot of issues, for example when interacting with people with significantly different worldviews, or with people (mainly in positions of power) who are liable to interpret advice as mockery, or...
