Writing How to Create Life-like emotions.

Got my first one star rating...

Actually, it would help in one way, it would remove anonymity. That's the only way that trolls can function. However, it would also probably promote retaliation reviews, where people 'return the favor' if someone gives them a bad review or harasses them via private message. Which is why it's not...

Got my first one star rating...

Sadly no, in RR they just have to open a chapter and then can rate it immediately, there is not timer or anything to 'prove' they've read it versus just click on a chap and hit you with a 0.5* Honestly, I'd rather we did away with ratings entirely.

    Willing to Edit!

I'm working on a new story that I would love for some editing on if the offer is still going! There is no Smut (at least yet and it will be a long way off before I consider putting any in).

Got my first one star rating...

That's a fair point, except...I've never heard of people leaving 5* ratings on stories that they don't read or enjoy but I have heard of people who admitted to leaving one stars on the stories of people they don't like or who had a higher ranking than their own stories or just because they saw...

    Words to replace said

Again, I never said you should only use 'said'. Please don't put words in my mouth. What I said was that 'said' is widely regarded by agents and publishers as the primary tag. Others should be used sparingly. Picking 4 anecdotes doesn't prove anything, because, as you said, there are millions...

    Words to replace said

I never said you should only use 'said', just that it should be your primary tag. Use things like 'shouted', 'roared', and 'ejaculated' sparingly, like a spice.

I saw that too, but have no idea how I would do that.

7 5 stars and 1 1 star. No comments or rationale, of course. Sigh. :blob_pat_sad:

    Words to replace said

I mean, you do you. But professionals don't agree with you. Can you write something without 'said'? Sure. Should you? 9 times out of 10, no. As to why add an invisible marker: a) It helps the reader keep up b) Dispels any potential confusion c) In no way precludes action tags in and alongside...

    Why is that considered cheating?

    Knowing the system [litRPG]

Yeah, that makes sense. It does often seem like the 'systems' these stories are in are particularly well thought out. The fact they are being built as they go is pretty obvious. I'm basing my system on a couple of real RPGs (loosely smashed together) so while it doesn't actually exist in...

The term "Mary Sue & Gary Stu" is a major pet peeve of mine TBH

I have not. I may have to check it out!

    Knowing the system [litRPG]

So I've read a few litRPGs, and in almost all cases, the MCs don't seem to know how the system works. Like either, it's some new thing that they've never encountered or whatever, but it is always a mystery to the MC. I've not read any of the Virtual Game Reality litRPGs, where I would hope that...

    Words to replace said

That's dangerous. It is easy to lose track of who said what, especially if several people are talking. This poster has the key. Do not avoid the word 'said'! It's important and it is invisible. Not using it in favor of words like the above is usually considered bad writing because it drags the...

How to read without using your mouth and without thinking?

So you mean you recognize foreshadowing and story tropes and these lead you to being aware of how narrative flow works and you no longer want to be aware of those things? I don't understand the 'using your mouth' part, do you mean you read out loud? As for the first thing, no, once you have...

The term "Mary Sue & Gary Stu" is a major pet peeve of mine TBH

Oh, god, this...yes! Never read the second book because of the first one's Mary Sueness.

The term "Mary Sue & Gary Stu" is a major pet peeve of mine TBH

You are absolutely correct, the Mary Sue term has taken on some serious sexist connotations. I think it was a legitimate criticism originally, but nowadays, it gets thrown at any female character who is capable or pulls off the same power fantasies that male characters can freely get away with...

Are you on this site to read only, write only, or both?

I'm just here to look at the pretty story covers! J/K Seriously, I am here mostly to write and read. Socialize a bit. I wouldn't mind more socializing.
