Why add unnecessary suffering, especially when it is not needed and over the top?

Before I start let me clarify some things. This is not an attack on anyone but an actual question. Is it just failed attempts at drama? Is it something going over my head? Why is it so common in the adventure genera, that it feels like 70% of these stories have it? Also, I understand that some...

Which is more interesting in a wilderness survival story in the topic of preparing for winter, and why? (See poll for choices)

For it to be conciderd a winter, in this discussion, the ground and water needs to freeze for more than a week at a time, and if a storm were to form or pass through it would be a winter one (Snow, sleet, hail, etc.). The character(s) start said survival in spring with no, or very few, tools...

What do you use to write, and why?

I use a tablet because I am more used to it than any other device, I type faster on it than I do a keyboard or phone, my handwriting is extremely bad, it is more portable than a laptop and has more screen than a phone.

Full question: Which is better in a long form wacky lighthearted story, like a romcom, a standard litRPG or a power system where the characters have a hard limit or a steep difficulty curve? Assuming no other part of the story matters outside of what is influenced by the taken path, I hav a gun...

Here is a small puzzle to solve, there is a fairly simple way to count to 144 only using your fingers. Can you figure out how?

Honestly, I am confused as to why we weren’t taught this in kindergarten or in school generally. It also makes timing things in seconds pretty easy. Oh, and the previous sentence was the only hint I am giving, not that you need it.

    Create and describe a monster/creature.

Create and describe a monster/creature in as many words as it takes to do the job. If you are feeling up to it do it as you would find in a story, compared to an encyclopedia. I was walking home when, there in my path, a large strange creature stood. It had tens of thin long seemingly wooden...

What is the goal of your magic system? A brief description of said system would be nice too.

Yesterday I spent 15 minutes creating a magic system to prove a point. That led me to think that there is no need for the reader to be given the metaphysics of the system in question if not important to the story. Which is probably something I should have realized after spending multiple months...

Add diegetic sound to a scene.

I feel like people forget that you can add diegetic sound to writing. Personally I feel like it can both sell the and set the mood of a scene. For this you can come up with your own passage, use something you have written before, or something.

    Which is more interesting.

Basically I have hit a wall in my outlining for a new story. I spent too much time on the power system and now I have a couple of conflicting ideas for which direction it should go. I am just spitballing some ideas, and wish to see which is more interesting… but first what I have so far: Terry...

Hello! I just want to start a small discussion on how, why, & when we read. Whether you read slowly or fast. If you prefer one genera over another. How long and how much you read at a time. How you decided what to read, and other things like that! Anyways I guess I will go first.
