Came in use when the forum was down, so there is a utility for it as a backup. But another point to bring up is it features everybody announcing something on their profile; that's handy when you've never knew somebody existed and suddenly spot something of interest on their profile page.

I do see the merit in that... maybe. I don't know. I react a lot to what I read on here, and it is selfish of me to think this way, but it's still true for me it is a severe limit when I bump that cap.
