Not really. I mean, how much do we know about Frodo's appearance, or Jean Valjean's, or most of the Musketeers, or the kids in the Chronicles of Narnia ? Generally you only have a "type" (Heroic, handicapped, hobbit, vampire, kid) and one or two physical traits for an MC in a LOT of stories...

Lost track of which ones I have and haven't seen or in what order. The second of the "Fate (something/something)" series I saw had what felt at the time to be one of the best openings ever, but I can't recall it now... ugh... Haven't seen a best ending that I can think of at the moment...

I have to half-heartedly disagree. Books like The Beginning Place (Ursula K. LeGuin) and several classic "coming of age" stories are, to one degree or another, written around sexuality and are far from crap. Now I will admit that a majority, perhaps around 75-80%, of such books ARE crap, solely...

If there is a good reason (i.e the characters attend a concert or take part in a grand ball), it would be more of a "gimmick" - and a cool one, if not overused. If just used to set the mood... well, audionovels frequently do this - sometimes it helps, sometimes it distracts.
