What are your thoughts on creators advertising their Patreon

See. I have no problem at all with people writing and sharing fan fiction - but if they are making money off of fan fiction for something I wrote, I'd damned well better either have given them explicit WRITTEN permission detailing their rights to my material and waiving any fees before they...

Recommendations looking for xianxia with "western" names characters

My wife subscribes to a video channel that does just that. It's fricking HILARIOUS. Especially since, no matter how large or small the cast is, they usually leave ONE name in phonetic Chinese and make the rest as blandly European/American English as possible. So you have Brad and Susan Jones...

    Cowboys VS Ninjas

Well... the "half-right" pun was actually pretty accurate in this case. They have BECOME part of the umbrella of what 4F goes into, but historically they were distinct and separate. In fact, there was (at least one) episode of Rawhide that kind of went into this divide, with the "sod busters"...

    I said I'd do it

At a convention a few years ago (I think the year COVID hit our area but might have been a year before or two after), I was talking to a guy who spent a few years in Japan. He was there when the anime began and frequented the comic shop where Yu-Gi-Oh was created. It was originally a one-shot...

Authors on Hiatus/Inactive Forever: Would You Ever Let Someone Else Finish Your Story?

It would depend on the story and the person ... and why I abandoned it. If I abandoned it because I died, then I honestly don't care if someone wants to finish it. If I abandoned it because I just didn't have time to work on it, then I'd have to have someone send me their proposal and some...

News about my Isekai Mecha fantasy novel

Now THERE you go... Though to promote The Mech Touch, Pocket FM did some really bad Youtube "Book Trailers" (seriously - if you want a laugh, look for the trailers for books you've read to see how far they stray from ANYTHING that happens ANYWHERE in the novel in these AI generated alleged...

    Word count

As a writer, I only care when the platform I'm writing for cares. As a reader, long chapters can be a turn-off and make me abandon a book unless the book itself is short or the long chapter is a rare thing. Short chapters rarely bother me.

how can i make slavic-coded wuxia-inspired novel appealing to readers?

Thinking back to the Baba Yaga stories they serialized in one of the children's magazines I got when little (Highlights, maybe, or Boy's Life -Early to mid-seventies), I could see going back to pure alchemy, essentially the European "version" of xianxia, but with a focus of transforming base...

News about my Isekai Mecha fantasy novel

Until the real reason the client wants a borderline obscene mech comes out, the whole section where the MC meets the client and hears his unusual demands is one of the funniest parts of the book so far.

Which platform's approach to promoting your fiction do you prefer?

By design so writers can't game the system. There are a lot of theories (mostly that it involves comments, "Favorites," and number of reads - and some of these are weighted differently, based on how long it has been in Trending).

    Are these guys AI?

Why do that when I can give them YOURS?

Should I post my sequel in the same series as my finished story?

Yeah - if my experiment with the Jack Diamond stuff (the second is not getting as much attention as the first ... partly because it stalled at 9 chapters but still) means anything, you really do need to keep them together unless they're very different or you can post a lot of chapters of the...

Why must it be a sword, especially in eastern cultivation, namely the jian sword?

You want to be really confused - I thought I had a handle on the differences between a "saber" a "cutlass" and a "rapier" ... until I visited a museum in New York with hundreds of them. There is a LOT of crossover between the terms (and they are ALL considered forms of sword - including the...

    Cowboys VS Ninjas

That's more "ranching" - which includes farming and animal husbandry. Cowboys included those who just rode the range in cattle drives, as well as those who ran farms, and those who just bred the cattle. Many cowboys were also farmers, as the income was more modest but also more consistent than...

Where do you get inspiration for your writing?

All the time. Most of my fiction is the result of a challenge of some sort - either I challenge myself to see if I can write something, or someone else issues a challenge that I decide to jump in on. After listening to several (mostly bad) system and isekai stories, I challenged myself to write...

How does it feel reading an old novel you wrote long ago?

Don't know. The only novel from way back when that I finished ... well, one print copy was sent to an agent who rejected it. One was sent to a (now ex) girlfriend, who read it and gave it to another friend before the chain of custody fell apart. The digital copy is on a 5.25" floppy disk for...

News about my Isekai Mecha fantasy novel

I've been listening to an audionovel called "The Mech Touch" where it is briefly mentioned that there was a very short period in mech design where they gave the mechs (usually exaggerated) gender traits. Most mech designers find that era embarrassing, so, of course, the MC is asked to revisit...

Do You Outline the Characters or do you do the characters and the story?

Never gone that far with the planning. Have a tab of "characters" where I record anyone I expect to use again later whenever I think to add them. Pretty much that's it.

    Annoyances with physical books

Don't look at Wheel of Time (either 12 or 14 volumes - I stopped at either 9 or 10 myself) or Sword of Truth (read four, believe there are seven volumes) then... IIRC, grab any two books in the series. 50/50 chance that the two books are the same size, or wildly different. Unlike the...
