You can work on your initial idea and expand it a bit. Since you already brought up the Medieval society that discourages religion, you can always have it be a symbol of the ruling class and how they took control over the country from the previous leaders (religious leaders and priests maybe)...

Personally, I rarely give 5s, but I often give 4s. If something has really jarring issues in my book, like heavy grammar errors or hard-to-read formatting but story's not completely unreadable, I probably give it a 3. Anything worse, I just don't rate and leave quietly.

I write one, so I obviously like it. Although I haven't watched the shows you mentioned since mine is more of the Shakugan no Shana vein (since it got mentioned) or like Persona, etc. It's not much of the "fantasy races living among men" type of setting.

I like the old one more. I prefer the colors and the character art there, and I would likely click it since it captures the whole Naruto "feel" a lot more.

I'd recommend Magi. Shounen series with just the right amount of adventure, action, reasonable magic systems, philosophical intrigue, mild fanservice, and likable characters.

Writing quality is not always equivalent to enjoyment or reader satisfaction. Sure, you need a semblance of coherence and good enough grammar, but it's a mass drop, it's not necessarily your writing itself that has gotten bad. It could be just story direction/decisions that people didn't like...
