Patience, research, and community. Those things will mitigate scammers. People in the same boat will tell you if things are sketchy, so ask as much as you want. The community will also know where you can get artwork done, even if it's not for only a 1000$. I'd be skeptical as the others say... -

You barely have a story up. If they contacted you here, and took you off site to discuss this, then it is most likely a scam. Don't give your money to anyone. Especially, if they haven't shown you a real portfolio. be wary about praise here, as sad as it is to say. -
