(Although it's more my opinion that these fantastic gems are examples of those that learned the correct lessons from the past, which is why they are able to employ the techniques so well while also applying the newer techniques that allow them to really hook in the reader and hold their attention like the older works were unable to do.)

You know, before 2020.
I had my own original sentence of : CNs is like a mountain of shit but there are a few gems in it.
(and only me that knew how to search and where/how, could find good unknown gems in uukanshu)

I'm actually of the opinion that writing is continuously improving over time.
Indeed.
Now i no longer use my "prev sentence (mountain of shit)"
but now its more like "Everything is now a pile of gems. But the gems are often flawed or fakes. And ultra rare to find good old flawless gems"

For example, we dont see retarded young masters, retarded MCs that say to be lowkey but fail next chap, etc

My approach toward older Vs. newer material is that I read older material to learn about lore and good world building, and I read newer material to be properly entertained and enjoy what I'm reading. Occasionally, I'll find something that completely blows me away like the 3 I named there, which manage to do both at the same time.

THIS ! TOTALLY THIS !

That is why i call 2 certain series, the 2.0 and 3.0 of "anti-routine" masterpiece. The 1.0 was the "The luckiest man" CN available on novelupdates.

I seriously resonate so much and feel crying.
You totally pulled out words of my mouth.

Really now? I might have to consider taking another look at murim or cultivation based novels. Those tropes, plus the constant cycle of unjust revenge plot, are the exact things that got me out of CN novels and those inspired by them in the first place.

^THAT IS THING JEMINI !

Chinese novels, their evolution speed is crazy. Authors.
Heck if you go to correct websites, you find out that like us, THEY ARE TOTALLY GOOD TASTES READERS. Heck their comments are like ours.
But sadly, the faceslap novels years ago, gave a too big prejudices about xianxias.

The last cultivation-style novel I actually enjoyed was one called Super-Gene, which I mostly enjoyed because it was a sci-fi set cultivation series, which meant there was a modern justice system which pretty much shut down all of the tropes I hate the most out of such webnovels. But, then, it went and moved the setting and introduced all those tropes anyway half way through.

Spoiler : MC smart. At begin, narrator say MC kept rerolling his "starting stats" for 20years. Bc he know how important they are. Sadly they are 3 different things TOGETHER REROLLED, which means it need high luck, like getting 3 dices of 100 and get perfect rolls.
He kept rerolling even if he got Perfect/high/Perfect rolls. He was ready to give up with the next best one but finally got 3 PERFECTS.

Early on (50+chaps) : Adventure !? Fck its xianxia trap. I dont go ! ; A celestial cub defenseless !? Fck this it's clearly a trap and a old xianxia trope ! I don't go !

Soon later : With my huge talent, i just go stay 24/7 in my cave to cultivate. (he did for whole novel)

Not sure if you missed this (not popular) old gem.

40 milleniums of cultivation.
Its old CN.
Scifi xianxia.
Also it was rare series, where the whole gov/country work together, with a CORRECT ENJOYABLE patriotism.
I cried a few times, in noble sacrifices portrayed. Especially the "train arc" and "skeleton memories" (dont read manhua, its only 10% of value)

Do you know ? (<sorry habit sentence)

Now even chineses call them "3rd rate novels"
And now, its very common for any CN to joke/meme/reference them.

Anyway, my current favorite Lite Novel is one called D-Genesis. It's a JP LN with a strangely Korean style setting in which magic appears on Earth and dungeons start appearing.

Only, the protagonist is a researcher and it goes deep into the geo-political angle of how all this stuff is affecting the world.

It is deliberately playing them as unambitious when it comes to getting stronger and the dungeon exploration, they just care about how they can profit off their dungeon research, how they can live an easy life, and how the things they are discovering are probably going to affect the world.

40 milleniums of cultivation.

Is probably a rare case, where a series that made me cry as much as any movie director MC (urban-CN) that wrote the movie "Hachiko(dog)"
Its same period as Doupo / Soul Land / etc
But it never caught the eyes of westerners/NU for some reason. So weird.

And it shows a LOT of geo-political awareness by the author. I actually learn things about various national politics and things about the shipping industry and logistics and such from reading it.

I am currently trying to write a Magical Girl series that takes a similar approach. It is also a changed-world setting, only for me it's otherworldy creatures invading Earth and then divine entities start granting humans powers. I'm taking inspiration from D-Genesis, Madoka Magica, Agartha Loop, and Worm.

I especially want to capture the D-Genesis angle of it. I really love the idea of seriously considering exactly how the introduction of this magic stuff would affect real world politics and social structures. It has been an incredibly research-heavy story. (Oh, and I was also serious about the WORM angle. It's not going to be a happy magical girl story.)
