Diary syndrome is common in first POV because the narrative is looser with meta-commentary as the narrator's inner thoughts that often fall into exposition of the narrator's experiences (telling) instead of showing through active scenes.
That hardly makes anything better? Her story is a diary she wrote. He's talking about stories that are poorly told as diary/journal entries and are obviously fiction, not people's real world accounts.
