Require new chapters to have at least 500 words to appear on the Front Page.

Many people release chapters between 1k and 5k words.
Personally, I have to admit I just aim for 1.5k to 2k.

Anyway, I believe there are multiple valid arguments to be made for how long chapters should be, and this suggestion isn't about that. However, I think anyone can understand that there needs to be a certain standard for our site.

Do we accept microchapters, which can be read in 15 seconds? Do we accept spam? Do we accept ads disguised as chapters?

There are people abusing the system by just creating "chapters" with a couple of hundred words, sometimes even just 1 sentence (to have their chapters pushed).

My suggestion is the following: Require new chapters to have at least 500 (I'd say 1k, but for now 500 would be an improvement) words to appear on the front page.
Any kind of trickery (like repeating the chapter or creating additional spam to reach the wordcount) should, of course, be forbidden.

If people still argue that they have an urgent reason to create 200-word chapters, then they shouldn't complain about the lack of visibility.

We already limit each stories to only appear on latest updates two times per day.

So? You can still release 2 microchapters with just a few hundred words every day.
You can still release 2 microchapters padded with announcement like that one Korean dude with 18cm dick. Even with the system in place.

People will find a way to make the chapter meet the minimum 500 words requirement. Word counts are easy to cheat.

Hmm... so what about chapters that aren't chapters, like maps, character profiles, plot summaries, and special announcements from the author? Sometimes authors post anything out of chapters, dude.

Is this actually a problem? Genuine question, I have not noticed anyone exploiting this myself, and I don't even remember when I last saw a story with average word count below 500.

I mentioned that, right? If people do that, the chapter can be reported, and the author could be warned or made ineligible for the front page for a month or so.

I think the argument, "People will abuse the system either way, so let's not care and just do nothing," is kind of weak.

Yes, and those chapters can still be made... but they will not appear on the front page.
Something like: "Author Notes, Character Profile, Faction Profile" should not appear as an update.

Not arguing. It's just that we need to have more main site mods before we can enforce that.

I mean, why? Like said before, you are already limited to 2/ch a day. So you cannot even "spam".

No author can release 2 chapters a day over a longer period of time. Why should people get 2 front page slots a day for 2 x 200-word chapters, when someone else who delivers one 5k-word chapter a week only gets 1/14 of that?

The better solution would be to make the chapter input on the dashboard to requires at least 500 words. That would be easier to implement than screening everything in latest updates.

Standalone maps, character profiles, and plot summaries would then be posted on the glossary. Special announcements on the author's profile.

Who are you to decided this? If you deliver only one chapter per week(even if its 5k) its your fault. Do you think someone who only upload 200 words chapter can hold his audience?

Why not?
Do they steal that place from you?
Do you want to start policing it? You know that enforcing it would be a stupid idea?
If they want to post 200-word chapters 10 times a day, so be it. It won't change a thing for others.
As long as it doesn't break content guidelines, users should be able to post whatever they want in whatever quantity/quality they want, and no one should care. Cause if we start caring about those things, next we will point at authors using em-dashes and do the same. Next, maybe ones that make one line per paragraph, and so on.

If you have time to propose this idea here, better use it on writing chapters for your story.

This suggestion was made because I stumbled over quite a few stories that release 200-word chapters and others who use chapters as a way to "Update" their readers and get additional readers without delivering new contents.
Others write: "Patreon" Update and blatantly break the rules, but still their stories get pushed.

Calling something like that a chapter is an insult, yet it comes with the same "reward" as releasing something real.

That's what I want to get rid of.

Allow people to post that kind of crap, who cares? DO NOT reward them with a front-page spot.

That means the author has a big enough reader base, and they are interested in what's happening. Totally normal. Nothing wrong with it.

The first page of the front page has 25 slots... so yes. I am not saying: "I want more clout," but I think it's clearly something that's not quite right. It will be abused, and it is currently being abused.
Other people get overshadowed/pushed back because of announcements.
I think it's a perfectly reasonable request. There should be some rules placed on chapters for them to appear on the front page.
Of course, they can still create those chapters... just without appearing on the front page. Absolutely no downside. Nothing changes. You act like I am attacking those people. I just don't think it's warranted that they get a public push.

If they make an announcement, it shows up in their readers' reading list. Doesn't need to show up on the front page as well.

It's called chapter, not Twitter. You can use your profile for those kinds of announcements. People who are interested can follow you.

That moment when you announce your story will be stubbed and it somehow become trending. Guilty.
Makes sense. Now I'm pretty sure the total number of favorites received in a day will be a determining factor in the trending list. Lol

"Is a Korean man's... originally this big? My God, this is... it's unbelievable."

Patience. We just won a war against translations. Most translations hogging trending and latest updates are gone.

If Tony think announcement chapters are problematic, they will be purged from the front page in time. But the priority is low since we are kinda focused on the remaining translations and monetized fanfics now.
