Can I still use grammarly as an editor?

Around 2 or 3 years ago, I used Grammarly as an editor for my fanfics. Back then, it would only correct spelling mistakes and sometimes suggest synonyms, but it let your work be yours. A few days ago, I wanted to get back into writing, and I tested Grammarly again, and it feels so different now. It wants to change everything about my writing, so that it almost feels like GPT. Am I missing a setting there, or is it just like it's now?

I humbly ask for advice.

Use it as an editor, and it gives you suggestions on how to reword a sentence if it seems awkward. You can ignore its advice if you want to, I do sometimes. Just don't hit the do-all changes button; go through each suggestion first. If you say it out loud, you might realize it's awkward, and you can reword it using Grammarly's suggestions or your own way.

It's basically saying, "Hey, man, this doesn't look right. You might want to fix it."

It isn't infallible either, so you need to take its suggestions with a grain of salt, but unless you are an English major, assume it does know more about sentence structure than you do.

That's mostly just what it's like these days. Most grammar tools have tried to integrate LLMs into their services even though I have yet to see it be worthwhile. It's still usable for checking punctuation, but I would avoid letting it rewrite really anything. That said, despite whatever their policies state, they're almost certainly using what you give it to train their AI. I'd recommend downloading something like LibreOffice and using the built-in spelling and grammar checker. It's not as powerful, but it does the job and it doesn't use your work to help build a plagiarism machine. A writing group or the feedback forms here can help with the rest (and give you better advice, honestly, as is usually the case where real people are involved).

What editor? Grammar editor? Well, Grammarly can certainly do it, but it's also limited.

Grammarly just corrects spelling errors according to UK standards. It even corrects US spellings to UK.

Furthermore, Grammarly isn't yet capable of correcting ambiguous sentence and paragraph structures.

So, Grammarly is only a superficial diagnostic tool for sentence structure and spelling.

And editing fiction is more than just grammar; there are many other elements of fiction that need to be considered, such as prose, pacing, POV, emotion, character, etc.

I find that sometimes the changes aren't outright about wrong phrases. Quite often I have a word at a special spot for emphasis. Or if a character uses slang. Grammarly corrects those away anyway.

Grammarly is mostly okay, even though they pretend to have slopified is a bit, just be discerning.

I was thinking about being a freelance editor until AI came along, and threw that possibility out the window.
I'm not sure how long I'll be able to be a viable writer, even as a hobby.
